Once upon a time this was considered the "richest square mile on earth." Now its population has dwindled from thirty thousand to just a few hundred. Once gold was dug from the earth. Now it changes hands in the casinos that line the main streets. One thing remains unchanged: the summer season of performances in the opera house built after the gold rush.

The gambling boom has financed the restoration of the old gold rush towns of Central City and Black Hawk, as well as surrounding areas. The Victorian architecture and enterprising spirit of their 19th century origins live on in the ultra-modern casinos. Travel to nearby Georgetown and Idaho Springs on the historic Georgetown Loop Narrow Gauge Railroad, crossing over the restored Devil's Gate High Bridge that looms 95 feet (28.96 meters) above Clear Creek.

In one story, Central City got its name because it was about half way between Nevada City (now known as Nevadaville) and Mountain City. Another says it took its name from the miner's supply store called "Central City Store." Its official name is "The City of Central." Black Hawk's name is believed to have come from an early "stamp" mill brought in from Rock Island, Illinois, and named for the famous Indian chief.
