          BERMUDA CRUISE ON H.A.L. "VEENDAM"!
written on Sep 28, 2011 by Ronald G. of Smithtown,N.Y.
Pros & Cons

The Pros

DOCKING IN-TOWN, AMBIENCE OF SHIP, EXTRA TIME IN PORT!

The Cons

SHOWS NEED MORE VARIETY!
The Review
I & my wife just returned on 09/25/11 from a wonderful week's cruise on the Veendam to the gorgeous island of Bermuda! I can truthfully say that this island is one of, if not the most beautiful island getaway spot & the most convenient, since air transportation is not needed from the tri-state area. The ship docked in town, which saved us money & time, from the other ship lines, i.e. NCL & RCCL, which dock at least one hour away by bus, at the Royal Dockyards. Even though the Veendam is 16 years old, it has been renovated in 2009 & is very tastefully done, throughout! It has a dome on the pool area, so you can still swim in inclement weather & also shows movies while you can relax in the whirlpool!
Additional Information
Ship Quality:
While the ship is relatively small, 55 thousand tons, it has all the needed amneties & is extremely well decorated! It is showing its age, in some areas, as we experienced toilet flushing problems, throughout the entire cruise, but were well compensated wi
Dining and Food:
The food selection is not the best that I have ever had but is more than adequate! The one problem that we experienced is that they do not let you serve yourself for the first two or so days & it caused a bit of backlog when trying to get serve yourself b
Stateroom Quality:
The condition & size of the cabin was very adequate except the bathroom door was directly across from the closets, in a very narrow hall & caused a "traffic-jam", for two people in the area!
Ship Staff Quality:
I would only rate the staff ratio to passengers as adequate but they were very friendly & helpful!
Entertainment Quality:
The entertainment needs more variety! They had only two dancers in the shows & most of the shows consisted of medley singing, i.e. two to four singers singing song after song with nothing else, making them somewhat repetitious!
Family Friendliness:
As we are a retired couple & saw very few children onboard in this September cruise, I didn't notice much activities for kid & don't think that this line caters to that agegroup!

Pros & Cons

The Pros

Location where it docks

The Cons

Selection of tours
The Review
The Veendam is an older but still beautiful ship. The one thing that sets it apart from virtually every cruise to Bermuda is its location on Front Street in Hamilton. From there we could explore the whole island, and still make it back in time for dinner each night. Docking at the Dockyard takes at least an hour and a half commuting time off your day, so it's worth the extra money to sail on the Veendam!
Additional Information
Ship Quality:
Dining and Food:
We liked the speciality restaurant and the no-fee Canaletto for a romantic dinner.
Stateroom Quality:
You won't be spending a lot of time in your cabin when you're on the island. If you're a light sleeper, make sure your room won't face Front Street in Bermuda (loud clubs).
Ship Staff Quality:
Everyone was amazing, especially the bartenders at the Martini Bar Mix.
Entertainment Quality:
Shows geared toward the older crowd, but they had other activities like wine tasting and mixology courses that were entertaining and educational.
Family Friendliness:
Hardly any kids on our fall cruise, but the kids areas look spectacular. Teens have part of a top deck all to themselves.
