          Good but not Great
written on Aug 28, 2011 by Frederick C. of Sudbury, MA
Pros & Cons

The Pros

Excellent cabins and cruise schedule, Great deserts & appetizers, Awesome wait staff

The Cons

Lack of medical policy, entrees were not as good as previous Princess cruises
The Review
This was a family cruise of 12 persons over three generations. Overall, I give this cruise a four of five stars. Very good but not perfect. One issue caused a major problem. My mother was discharged in Istanbul to receive hospitalization. My sister and I accompanied her offshore. We sought to rejoin the cruise 4 days later but the ship's doctor denied approval to reboard. Princess' policy is to give the ship's doctor total authority to grant or disapprove reboarding. This is somewhat skewed towards denial of reboarding due to risk adversity. I fully understand that position but it does not allow for an objective review, consideration of logistics nor does another doctor's opinion count. We were eventually allowed to reboard after lengthy discussions. However, the entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth. if you are not in perfect health, please cosnider these policies prior to booking.
Additional Information
Ship Quality:
Overall, from a physical perspective, this ship's infrastructure and layout is excellent.
Dining and Food:
Four of five stars for food overall. The buffests were excellent in diversity of choice and overall quality. The pizza was amazing for a cruise ship but the hamburgers were mediocre. In the main dining room, the appetizers and deserts were first class.
Stateroom Quality:
Excellent. Similar to other Princess boats. We opted for the Caribe deck, wihich offers the larger balcony. Excellent!
Ship Staff Quality:
While the wait staff was excellent, we had issues with the medical staff.
Entertainment Quality:
Good overall.
Family Friendliness:
Good overall.

Pros & Cons

The Pros

Dining room food and service

The Cons

small bathroom
The Review
I have taken six cruises of ten days or more. The Ruby is my favorite by far. I loved the lobby and the entertainment that was performing there. We boarded the Ruby in Venice, toured the Med and ended in Barcelona. We loved everything. We were seated at a round table for eight in the main dining room. I loved the room because it didn't feel like I was just shoved into a high school cafeteria like I have felt on a few ships. The room was beautiful and romantic, food was excellent and the service was the best I have had. The entertainment staff was wonderful. They were more friendly than on the other ships. They even remembered my name. I am ready to go back!!! I find myself searching for cruises to take on the Ruby. The ship is beautiful.
Additional Information
Ship Quality:
I was a little confused about taking a certain elevator to get to my dining room. The ship was always spotless and beautiful.
Dining and Food:
Everything was wonderful.
Stateroom Quality:
We loved our room. The bathroom was small and no grab bars in the shower.
Ship Staff Quality:
The staff always accomodated our requests. Everyone was very friendly and made us feel welcome.
Entertainment Quality:
The activity staff were great and always encouraged you to join the next project. The dancers were okay but couldn't compare to the dancers on the Queen Mary.
Family Friendliness:

Pros & Cons

The Pros

The overall service and cleanliness of the ship and crew.

The Cons

The shops.
The Review
We took our first cruise on the Ruby in September of 2010 from Venice to Barcelona. We found the crew to be very accommodating, respectful, clean and attentive to our needs. The ship itself was in great shape with its crew performing maintenance whenever and wherever needed. The dining experience was exceptional food you'd expect from a 4 to 5 star restaurant, the breakfast and lunch buffet were more than acceptable with a large and varied assortment to surely please all appetites. We enjoyed all areas of the ship and would recommend them highly to anyone. We are about to take a second cruise on the Ruby in December and though this ship is going in for a minor refub right after our trip I expect the experience will be equal.
