The ms Westerdam is the third in Holland America Line's series of Vista-class ships. As such, she embraces the latest industry and environmental technologies such as her use of a diesel-electric power plant for optimal energy efficiency and an Azipod propulsion system. Most of her staterooms have ocean views and many have private verandahs.
The theme of ms Westerdam's art collection is Dutch heritage in the New World. Art ranges from paintings of historic Dutch ships, such as Henry Hudson's Half Moon, to a huge Indian silver-overlaid wood palace doorway, a bone tobacco pipe carved in the shape of a woman's head to a collection of 5,000-year-old pre-Columbian carved limestone figures from Ecuador. Contemporary pieces include an original Andy Warhol portrait and signature sculptures by Sedona artist Susanna Holt.

| CABIN CATEGORY: |
VC (Balcony) – great cabin and layout – sofa and table is great to have for pre-dinner drinks, etc. (understand that the Wesderdam will be in for an upgrade this spring (2007) at which time the cabins will be upgraded slightly to include such things as an LCD TV and a DVD player – current TV is the old tube style which takes up a fair bit of room on the desk).
|
| FOOD & SERVICE: |
Excellent. I would recommend that people try the Pinnacle Dinning room for a special night. The food in the restaurant is excellent; the food in the Pinnacle is 5+. Well worth the small extra for that special night.
|
| ENTERTAINMENT: |
Excellent. Too bad the bars did not stay open a little latter (till 1am or later). It seems that most of the entertainment in the bars closed at midnight. Also, we tend to always take the late seating (8:30pm) – the entertainment seems to be focused around the early seating and thus we missed a number of events. One way (as with other ships) they held some of the entertainment events before the late seating time to allow for the late seating people to attend more than one event that evening.

Excellent. Used the ship for one island and for two of the islands we arranged our own shore excursions when we arrived at port that day (gave us flexibility and the cost was also lower).

Lots of room on the ship, food is excellent, staff are excellent, entertainment is excellent. Overall my wife and I had a fantastic time on this ship (we had just sailed on the Holland America Noordam in September for our 25th wedding anniversary – both are great). If we were going with our family however (we have 3 teenage children who have cruised with us before) I would suggest another cruise line – my # 1 pick for families would be Royal Caribbean (yes the ships with the rock climbing wall, and skating rink) – these ships tend to attract and have better entertainment for families. |

Balcony(VH category)...preferred the upgraded Balcony suites (SS category) we had on the Zuiderdam which gave you larger bathrooms, rooms and balconies. Nice touch that they gave you robes for your rooms.

| FOOD & SERVICE: |
Food was excellent with a wide variety in both the dining room and the Lido Restaurant. Service was modified due to the outbreak of norovirus on ship, but handled very well. We preferred the food on Holland America over Royal Carribbean.

| ENTERTAINMENT: |
Excellent - The only complaint was that the secondary lounge (Queens Lounge) was too small to accomodate all the people interersted in watching the Super Star competition.

N/A, not many children on our cruise due to the time of year. A good time to go if you do not want to have a lot of children around.

Nice ship, has more of a feel of old time cruising and more relaxed atmosphere compared to other lines that had more "partiers on board". Quieter around the pool area than some other lines.

If you are looking for a relaxing cruise to catch up on reading and quiet time this would be the cruiseline for you. We found the crew on the Royal Carribbean Mariner to be a bit more friendlier and interacted with us more than on this line. But overall they were fine. |

VA 7023 (Balcony Cabin) Cabin was spacious for two people. The shower has a massage head, which was a nice feature. Bed were very comfortable with plush bedding.

| FOOD & SERVICE: |
The food was excellent to good with some dishes better than others. On formal night the lobsters were tiny and the steak also was tiny. We thought the service was very slow on this particular ship. Because the service was so slow at breakfast and lunch we only ate in the dining room for dinner. The rest of our meals we ate in the buffet.

| ENTERTAINMENT: |
Enjoyed all of the entertainment. The shows were all good.

Did not take excursions, as we have been to the ports before on prior cruises. We arranged our own trips.

Had alot of onboard activities that we enjoyed. We played trivia.

Main deck - Room 1116 - Category K - I was pleasantly surprised upon embarkation to realize that I had been upgraded to a room with a view.

| FOOD & SERVICE: |
I thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast and lunch offerings in the Lido casual eating area. I was somewhat disappointed in the evening offering at the Lido area. Firstly, casual dining was available from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This time forced me to eat early meals as I do not like to eat in the dining room. I realize that this set-up probably works well with most of the clientele on the ship. Secondly, I felt that the desserts offered during dinner time were pretty much the same from night to night. Some variety would have been welcomed, especially some of the same offerings that were found on the dessert menu for the dining room. I also felt that the staff in the casual eating area were not as diligent to quickly clean tables as the staff on other ships.
|
| ENTERTAINMENT: |
I thoroughly enjoyed the production shows. The four singers were great and had such stage presence. The Superstar competition was also an enjoyable event. The illusionist and featured vocalist also provided wonderful entertainment. The cruise director was very personable and spoke when passing passengers whilst on the ship.

| SHORE EXCURSIONS: |
Due to events beyond the ship's control, a couple of tours had to be cancelled. The staff from this department were very accomodating in providing another alternative at the pier. There were no problems with the cost of the tours being credited to my shipboard account.
|
| ONBOARD ACTIVITIES: |
I enjoyed the various activities that I witnessed. I enjoyed reading and watching others dance, play bingo, etc.

| OVERALL IMPRESSION: |
The ship is very nice, and I found this first cruise with HAL to be enjoyable. The only negative I could see with regard to the ship was that the carpet was worn in some areas. The carpet was clean and I can only imagine how much traffic this carpet encounters.
|
| COMMENTS: |
My only concern would be the somewhat limited eating options which are available in the evening. After the casual dining closes promptly at 7:30 p.m., pizza and pasta are the only options until the late buffet from 11 p.m. to midnight. I also missed the availability of fresh fruit during the evening time. |
