Named for a dam on the river Maas, the ms Maasdam is the fifth ship in Holland America Line's history to bear this name. ms Maasdam features a $2 million collection of arts and antiques and an interior motif that pays homage to the historical Dutch East and West India companies of the 17th through 19th centuries. At 720-feet, the ms Maasdam is designed to carry fewer guests while providing them with more space for maximum comfort. Accommodating only 1,258 guests, many of the staterooms on ms Zaandam offer commanding ocean views, and each of the 149 suites has a private verandah.
For rejuvenation thru exercise, Holland America's Maasdam cruise ship spa offer fitness classes to help you achieve optimum health and vitality. Yoga, Pilates, spinning, aquarobics and cardio Ki-Bo circuit training are available for students of all levels.
Take advantage of treadmills, stationary bikes, stairsteppers, rowing machines, weights and weight machines. And while you're working out, refresh your soul with soothing panoramic views of the ocean.
- 2 Outdoor swimming pools (one with a sliding glass roof)
- Health spa, includes massage, sauna and steam treatments
- Duty free shops
- Library
- Beauty parlor
- Deck sports
- Big Apple children's game room. A great place for guests 5 through 17 to gather. A full time youth coordinator is on duty throughout the cruise to supervise activities for all ages
- Ocean Spa fitness center equipped with Stairmasters, treadmills, bicycles and free weights. Aerobic classes are also available
- Whirlpool
With more than 500 different food items on a typical 7-day cruise, Holland America Maasdam offers the most extensive menus at sea. Enjoy modern Continental cuisine, regional specialties appropriate to each cruising area and traditional favorites. Our chefs are all members of the prestigious Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs gourmet society.
- Each evening as the dinner hour approaches, the melodious call of the chime master invites guests to the main Dining Room where another incredible experience awaits. Servers greet guests and present menus of sumptuous five-course selections, from appetizers and drinks to entrees and dessert, while a quartet plays soft dinner music. Savor seared sea scallops, filet mignon topped with crab and Hollandaise, and wines rated "excellent" by The Wine Spectator. Fresh herbs and imaginative combinations make lighter fare an equally tempting choice. We gladly offer a kosher menu and can easily meet special dietary needs upon request
- The Lido Restaurant - with its pool and terrace on one side and the ocean all around - is the hallmark of every Holland America ship. In fact, our Lido Restaurant was the first of its kind in the cruise industry, and although many have imitated the concept, there is no match for our extensive menu, such as carved meats, fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables, pastas and salads. And as always, impeccable service provided by our attentive, yet unobtrusive staff, is never far away.
- The Pinnacle Grill* offers a level of elegant sophistication unmatched anywhere on the seven seas. Guests who dine at the intimate, reservations-only Pinnacle Grill will enjoy candlelight and fine decor, creating a romantic ambiance that sets the stage for fresh dishes and select wines. Creative and innovative menus, drawing from regional ingredients of the highest quality, will delight the palate and ignite the senses. Choose your own cut of aged Sterling Silver Beef from the display tray.
Aboard the Holland America's Maasdam, you can enjoy the latest in Las Vegas style gaming in our friendly casinos.
There is something for everyone in our onboard casino, so come try your luck - you could walk away a big winner! The casino offers a wide range of slots, from nickels to five-dollar machines, including video poker and the Megacash jackpot, the biggest progressive jackpot on the seven seas linked to over 50 cruise ships worldwide.
Table games include favorites such as Blackjack and Craps as well as the latest games of Fun 21 and Three Card Poker. You can join in the fun of a slot tournament and Blackjack championship to win a huge cash prize!
Our friendly dealers provide complimentary gaming lessons for novices, and credit lines for high rollers can be established prior to cruising. Ocean Players Club Logo Players can join the Ocean Players Club to be eligible to receive complimentary beverages and other benefits.
- The Culinary Arts Center, presented by Food & Wine magazine, is the setting for gourmet cooking demonstrations and interactive classes
- Explorations Cafe, powered by The New York Times, features the largest library at sea, as well as comfortable music listening stations and Internet access
- $2 million collection of art and artifacts
- The Rembrandt Show Lounge features Las Vegas-style productions, talented vocalists, illusionists, comedians and variety acts
- The Crow's Nest, where sweeping views make this observation lounge a top choice for relaxing during the day, and in the evening transforms into a hip, fashionable nightclub features top-notch DJs and great bands
- Club HAL, dedicated youth facilities and activities for kids ages 3 to 12
- The Loft for teens, new areas designed exclusively for teens (ages 13-17) to have fun, socialize and hang out with people their own age

- Half Moon and Hudson Room seating a total of 150 - adjoin the theater and also may be used for meetings and private parties, as well as scheduled activities

We were on the Main Deck in cabin 529 5th deck. We are always satisfied with our accommodations aboard any of the Holland ships. This is a inside cabin, very comfortable and well taken care of by the cabin stewart. The beds are the most comfortable on any line that we have been on. Linens are top of the line, towels are Egyptian cotton, fluffy and soft. A waffle robe is always there for our use. All the toletries are from the Spa. Cabins are kept spotless as well as the rest of the ship. Let me say that when Holland says "Signature of Excellance" they mean just that. This cruise line is outstandy in everyway. The Maadam is a superb ship, with a excellant crew.

| FOOD & SERVICE: |
What can I say except its the Best of any line that we have been on. The food was excellant on the Maasdam, great variety, presentation and service. The Indonesia/Fillapino crew are by far the best. Always willing to go that extra mile, remembering names, know what you drink,Just friendly and smiling all the time. They are well trained. If I can say the reason we choose Holland to begin with was just this reason. The crew and the food. Ms. Maasdam is one of our favorite ships and this is the third time sailing with her.
|
| ENTERTAINMENT: |
The entertainment is just about the same on most ships. They have some good entertaniners that they bring on board, but other then that its the usual fare of on board dancers and singers.
|
| SHORE EXCURSIONS: |
We generally go on our own for the simple reason if we don't want to stay out for hours we can come back when we care too. Our understanding is the excursions are very good and interesting.
|
| ONBOARD ACTIVITIES: |
Lots to do aboard ship. And its NOT just bingo! They have various programs for everybody. The ship does not close down at 7:00 There are dances, all kind of fun stuff. And if you just want to hang out on the deck and read you can do that. The Explorations Cafe aboard the Holland ships is outstanding. Over 2000 books to chose from, interent on the same level, game playing, puzzles to do,listening to the music another thing to do. If I were to name all the activites that is available it would take up too much space. Believe me you will not be bored and if you are they you don't belong on any cruise ship.
|
| CHILDRENS PROGRAM: |
The Holland Line just update their ships to appeal to teenagers and younger children. On the very top deck is a wonderful place for teens, with their own space which is beautiful with lots of interesting spaces. Younger children have their own space too.

| OVERALL IMPRESSION: |
Ms. Maasdam is a well cared for ship. Its very beautiful and lovely for a smaller ship. The cabins and public rooms are always kept in top condition. The crew is always cleaning and polishing everything. The pool area is always a busy place and towels are readly supplied and I have to say the crew goes that extra mile to make sure you have everything you need to make sure you are comfortable.I can't say enough good things about the Maadam. If I were taking a cruise for the first time I would certainly choose the Ms. Maasdam. You will love everything about this great ship and its crew because of the service and the way they make you feel.

large outside cabin D level -- nice sized, BUT air conditioning very weak (problem existed on ship) -- we had to get a fan from the front desk in order to circulate air in the cabin; it was always necessary to remind our steward to replace toiletries (shampoo) and water.
|
| FOOD & SERVICE: |
Breakfast (particularly room service) and Lido lunch was quite good. Ice cream readily available (as was pizza, hotdogs, hamburgers, etc). Dinner in the Dining Room was a big disappointment -- little choice (NO prime rib the whole 11 days) and horrible desserts. Thanks to Smart Cruiser, we were given vouchers for one night at Pinnacle Grill (lovely surprise, thanks so much). That was a great dinner -- spectacular Rib Steak and mouthwatering desserts. Service itself by dining room and bar staff was excellent -- efficient and cheerful.
|
| ENTERTAINMENT: |
Crew Shows and singers were great. We enjoyed the singing and dancing shows. We could have done without the comedian, banjo player, and illusionists (walked out of those shows).
|
| ONBOARD ACTIVITIES: |
Blissfully, very few. Great team trivia . Activities are low key -- you're not always being interrupted with pool activities and loudspeaker announcements. Unfortunately, New Year's Eve Parties were pretty poor -- nothing like the Century.
|
| OVERALL IMPRESSION: |
Ship is showing its age. We like the size of the ship, but problems with air-conditioning, stabilizers, coffee (coffee machine was broken) suggest looking for a newer ship for next cruise.
|
| COMMENTS: |
HAL offers a restful cruise experience. Unfortunately, food and service has declined over the past several years -- it's not the line it once was, but for those with realistic expectations, an enjoyable, relaxing cruise awaits you. |

Great. Holland is a little old fashion with their music/dance they tend to go with the older group.
