Which north?

Pick a region and the list below filters to it. Cities, fjords or lava: three different weeks.

Most popular

Baltic capitals

  • Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn, plus Warnemünde for Berlin and Visby or Riga
  • 7 to 11 nights from Copenhagen or Stockholm on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Celebrity and Holland America
  • With St. Petersburg off the map, Stockholm and Tallinn get the long days it used to take

Best for: city people, first Northern Europe trips, design and history fans

Scenery

Scandinavia & the fjords

  • Oslo, Bergen, Geiranger, Flåm and the Norwegian coast, often with Copenhagen and Aarhus
  • 7 to 12 nights from Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Southampton
  • Midnight sun in June and July; the cruise for people who want the deck, not the museum

Best for: scenery over cities, families, photographers

Wild card

Iceland

  • Reykjavik, Akureyri, Isafjordur and the Westfjords, sometimes across to Greenland
  • 10 to 14 nights from Amsterdam, Southampton or Reykjavik; Celebrity, Holland America, Viking, Princess and the expedition lines
  • Whales, waterfalls and the Blue Lagoon; a circumnavigation is the way to see it

Best for: nature first, repeat Europe cruisers, small-ship fans

Which line for Northern Europe?

Long port days and short seasons; the line decides how much of each capital you actually see. Our one-line take, with a link to each deals page.

Timing

When to go

May to September, and the window is short. June and July give you 19 hours of daylight; August the warmest water in the Baltic.

MayLilacs and tulips, the first ships, cool and bright. The lowest fares of the season and empty museums.
June to JulyWhite nights: it never really gets dark in Stockholm or Helsinki. Midsummer festivals, peak demand, peak fares.
AugustWarmest month, Baltic swimming at Visby, Scandinavian schools back by mid-month so the crowds ease. Good value late in the month.
SeptemberCrisp and golden, the last ships, fall color on the archipelago; some Iceland and Norway sailings catch early northern lights.
Good to know

Northern Europe cruise questions we answer every day

Do I need a visa or a passport?

A passport valid six months beyond your return. US and Canadian citizens need no visa for the EU, Norway, Iceland or the UK; from 2026 the EU’s ETIAS travel authorization applies and we remind you when you book. Russia is no longer on any itinerary, so no Russian visa is involved.

Is Berlin really a cruise stop?

The ship docks at Warnemünde on the Baltic coast and Berlin is 2.5 to 3 hours each way by coach or train. Ships stay 14 to 18 hours to make it work. Do it with a ship excursion or a private driver who guarantees your return; a missed ship here is expensive. If Berlin is the point, go there before or after instead.

What happened to St. Petersburg?

Cruise lines stopped calling in Russia in 2022 and have not returned. The Baltic week is better for it in one way: Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn now get full days or late nights instead of being squeezed around two days in Russia.

How much walking is there?

A lot, and it is the best part. Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, Tallinn’s old town and Copenhagen’s center are all walkable from the pier or a short shuttle; cobbles everywhere, so bring the good shoes. Hop-on buses at every port if walking is hard.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, gratuities, drinks packages and excursions are extra.

What do the SmartCruiser picks mean?

They are sailings where booking through SmartCruiser gets you something you do not get booking direct: instant savings, bonus onboard credit, a Special SmartCruiser rate we hold on that sailing, or a senior, resident or police & fire fare that beats the best public price.
