When to go

Africa is three seasons: South Africa and the islands from November to April, Morocco all winter, Suez and Egypt in spring and fall.

November to DecemberSouth Africa opens: whales leaving Hermanus, jacaranda in bloom, Cape summer starting. Pre-holiday prices.
January to MarchPeak Cape summer, calm seas off Durban, the Seychelles at their calmest between monsoons. Morocco and the Canaries at their most pleasant.
April to MayShoulder: the last South Africa loops, and the spring Suez voyages from Dubai to the Med with Egypt and Jordan; the best value for the Red Sea.
June to OctoberDry season for safari, but the cruise ships are in Europe. The fall Suez voyages return in October.

Africa cruise questions we answer every day

Do I need a visa?

US citizens need no visa for South Africa, Morocco, the Canaries (Spain), Mauritius or the Seychelles on cruise visits. Egypt and Jordan issue visas on arrival or through the ship for a fee; Kenya and Tanzania need e-visas. We list exactly what your sailing needs when you book, and your passport must be valid six months beyond your return with blank pages.

Can I add a safari?

Yes, and you should. From Cape Town it is a two-hour flight to Kruger or the private reserves of Sabi Sand; three nights is enough. We package the safari, the Cape nights and the cruise together.

Which Africa cruise for a first time?

The MSC South Africa season for value and ease, or a Cape Town luxury voyage if the itinerary matters: Mossel Bay, Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay for Hluhluwe game drives, and Mozambique.

Is the Red Sea route sailing?

The lines monitor it daily and have rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope when needed in recent seasons. We tell you the current routing for your dates and the line’s policy if an itinerary changes before you book.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, gratuities, drinks packages and excursions are extra unless the line’s offer says otherwise.

What do the SmartCruiser picks mean?

They are sailings where booking through SmartCruiser gets you something you do not get booking direct: instant savings, bonus onboard credit, a Special SmartCruiser rate we hold on that sailing, or a senior, resident or police & fire fare that beats the best public price.
