The Danube is not only Europe's second longest river—more than twice the length of the Rhine and nearly three and a half times the length of the Rhône. It flows through ten different countries and more than a dozen languages are spoken on its banks. Enjoy an intriguing, panoramic view of two thousands years of European history as you travel along the lyrical "Blue Danube."

Avalon Waterways River Cruises - Rhine

Avalon Waterways River Cruises - Rhine

The Rhine River is the essence of romance. Born as an untamed river in the Swiss Alps, the Rhine takes the scenic route to the North Sea, illuminating some of Europe's most fascinating sights and customs. Historically and culturally, the Rhine has been a crucial source of sustenance, pride and inspiration. Fortresses and castles along the Rhine's embankments highlight the value ancient empires placed on these waters.

Winding across Central Germany, the Main River is formed by the joining of the Red Main and the White Main, meeting the Rhine River at the town of Mainz. The Main-Danube canal stretches for a length of 106 miles from Bamberg to Regensburg with a total of 16 locks, making it possible to travel via river cruise ship from the North Sea to the Black Sea.

Avalon Waterways River Cruises - Moselle

Avalon Waterways River Cruises - Moselle

Flowing through France, Luxembourg, and Germany, the Moselle River meanders from sleepy village to village, offering views of fairytale castles and stone-clad fortresses, some beautifully maintained and restored, others in ruins from battles long ago. Wineries and quaint hillside towns are hidden around every major bend of the river. The Moselle River provides excellent opportunities to relive history, soak in the sights of untouched nature, or sit quietly in a riverside café with a plate of cheese and a glass of the region's sweet, floral wine.

Avalon Waterways River Cruises - Seine

Avalon Waterways River Cruises - Seine

The Seine River rises just northwest of Dijon and flows in northwesterly through Paris before emptying into the English Channel at Le Havre. It's one of Europe's great historic rivers and since the early Middle Ages has been considered the river of Paris. Cruising along these waters combines the best of urban and rural French culture, from the burlesque cabarets of Paris to the sleepy medieval towns along the shoreline, and the breathtaking scenery in between. Historians will enjoy a journey back in time along the Seine, with glimpses into antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the most critical moments of World War II.
