Three ways to sail from New York

No flights, no checked bags, and your car waits at the pier. Pick the trip and the list filters itself.

Most popular

Bermuda in a week

  • 5 to 7 nights from Manhattan or Cape Liberty, April to October
  • Two to three nights docked at King’s Wharf, so you get beach days and a night out in Hamilton
  • Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival all run it

Best for: first cruises, couples, anyone who wants a real island without a long sea crossing.

Fall classic

Canada & New England

  • 7 to 10 nights up the coast: Newport, Boston, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Saint John and sometimes Quebec City
  • Peak foliage runs late September through mid October
  • Queen Mary 2, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, MSC and Oceania

Best for: leaf peepers, grandparents and grandkids, lobster and lighthouses.

Winter escape

Bahamas & Caribbean, no flight

  • 7 to 9 nights to Port Canaveral, Nassau and the private islands; 10 to 12 nights deep into the Caribbean
  • Two sea days each way to settle in, then warm water every day
  • Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival and MSC sail all winter

Best for: families on school breaks, snowbirds who hate airports, long relaxing sea days.

When to go

New York sails all year. Here is when each kind of trip is cheapest, and when it is worth paying more.

January to MarchCaribbean and Bahamas sailings only, and the lowest fares of the year outside Presidents’ week. Pack a coat for sailaway.
April to MayBermuda starts. The first sailings are the year’s best Bermuda value, and the water is already swimmable by late May.
June to AugustPeak Bermuda. Schools are out and summer fares climb. Book early for a balcony.
September to OctoberFoliage season on Canada and New England, so those sailings are busy; October Bermuda is quiet and well priced.
November to DecemberThanksgiving and Christmas weeks are peak. The first two weeks of December are the quiet bargain for the Bahamas.

New York cruise questions we answer every day

Which terminal does my ship use, and what does parking cost?

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity sail from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, where parking in the terminal lot runs about $22 to $25 a day. Norwegian, Carnival and Oceania use the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on the West Side at 48th to 52nd Streets, with rooftop parking at $45 a night. MSC and Cunard sail from the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, where the lot is also $45 a night, taxes included. Off-site lots near Newark airport with a shuttle run about $16 to $20 a day. Your confirmation always names the terminal.

Which airport is closest if we are flying in?

Newark (EWR) is the easy answer for Cape Liberty, about 15 miles and 30 minutes by taxi. For Manhattan, LaGuardia is 30 to 45 minutes and JFK about an hour. For Brooklyn, JFK is the shortest ride at 30 to 40 minutes. We can add a transfer or a hotel to your booking.

Should we come in the night before?

If you are driving from within three hours, a same-day arrival is fine; ships board from about 11 a.m. and sail around 4 p.m. If you are flying, come in the night before. Midtown hotels put you ten minutes from the Manhattan terminal, and Jersey City or Bayonne hotels sit next to Cape Liberty.

Do I need a passport to cruise from New York?

On closed-loop sailings that start and end in New York, US citizens can sail to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Canada with a birth certificate and government photo ID. A passport is required for the Queen Mary 2 crossing and any one-way sailing. We recommend a passport for everyone: if you need to fly home from Bermuda or Halifax, you cannot board without one.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Gratuities, drinks packages, excursions and parking are extra.

What does SmartCruiser add that I would not get booking direct?

Bonus onboard credit per stateroom on sailings where the line allows it, instant savings on selected departures, Special SmartCruiser rates we hold on popular New York sailings, and senior, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut resident, and police and fire fares when they beat the public price. The picks at the top of the list are the sailings where that extra applies.
