Mediterranean cruises

Tapas in Barcelona, pasta in Naples, gelato in between.

The Mediterranean is the most cruised sea on earth for a reason: six countries in a week, a different city every morning and the ship as your hotel. Western Med weeks from Barcelona and Rome (Florence, Naples, the French Riviera), Eastern Med to the Greek Isles and Croatia, and Central Med to Malta and Sicily, on everything from MSC and Royal Caribbean to Viking and Oceania, April to November. SmartCruiser shows every Mediterranean sailing with taxes and fees included and puts the ones with SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit at the top.

Which Mediterranean?

Pick a region and the list below filters to it. They are three different trips at three different prices.

Most popular

Western Mediterranean

  • Barcelona, Provence, the French Riviera, Florence and Pisa from Livorno, Rome, Naples and Capri
  • 7 nights round trip from Barcelona or Rome on MSC, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Virgin, Princess and Costa
  • The best value in Europe: the most ships, the shortest flights, the lowest per-night fares

Best for: first Europe cruises, families, anyone who wants Italy and Spain in one week

Warmest water

Eastern Mediterranean & Greek Isles

  • Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete and Corfu; Dubrovnik, Kotor and Split; Istanbul and Ephesus
  • From Athens, Venice or Ravenna, and Rome; 7 to 12 nights
  • Swims in October, sunsets in Oia, late nights in port on Norwegian and Virgin

Best for: couples, honeymoons, island people, anyone who has done the Western Med

Off the beaten track

Central Mediterranean

  • Malta, Sicily (Palermo, Messina, Taormina), Sardinia, Corsica and the Amalfi Coast
  • Often folded into 10 to 14 night itineraries from Rome or Barcelona
  • Fewer ships, smaller ports, the Med that Italians vacation in

Best for: repeat Med cruisers, history and food travelers, small-ship fans

Which line for the Mediterranean?

The Med is where the line matters most: port-heavy weeks suit some ships far better than others. Our one-line take, with a link to each deals page.

Timing

When to go

April to November, with the Western Med running a little longer at each end. The sweet spots are the shoulders.

April to MayMild, uncrowded, wildflowers in Provence and Sicily; the lowest Med fares after Easter. The sea is still cool for swimming.
June to AugustHot (Rome hits 95), every ship running, families everywhere, peak prices. Pick late nights in port and early excursions.
September to OctoberWarm sea, thinner crowds, harvest season in Tuscany and Provence. October in the Greek Isles is the best month of the year.
November to MarchA handful of ships stay for 10 to 12 night winter Med loops from Barcelona, Rome and Genoa; cool, cheap, museums to yourself.
Good to know

Mediterranean cruise questions we answer every day

How many sea days will I get?

Very few. Most 7-night Med cruises visit six ports in seven days. If you want sea days, look at a 10 to 14 night itinerary or a transatlantic crossing at either end of the season.

Do I need a visa or a passport?

A passport valid six months beyond your return. US and Canadian citizens need no visa for the EU or the UK; from 2026 the EU’s ETIAS travel authorization applies and we remind you when you book. Turkey lets cruise passengers ashore for the day without a visa; we confirm that for your sailing.

Should I fly in the day before?

Always. Flights to Europe arrive in the morning after an overnight, and a delay can cost you the ship. Two nights before in Barcelona, Rome or Athens turns the flight into part of the trip.

Western or Eastern Med for a first cruise?

Western if you want Italy, Spain and France in one week with the most ships and the lowest fares. Eastern if you want the islands and warm water and are happy to fly to Athens or Venice. Doing one this year and the other next is how most of our clients end up.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, gratuities, drinks packages and excursions are extra.

What do the SmartCruiser picks mean?

They are sailings where booking through SmartCruiser gets you something you do not get booking direct: instant savings, bonus onboard credit, a Special SmartCruiser rate we hold on that sailing, or a senior, resident or police & fire fare that beats the best public price.
