Pacific Coastal cruises

Under the Golden Gate, wine in Santa Barbara, home by Sunday.

Twice a year the Alaska fleet moves between Vancouver or Seattle and Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, and the 3 to 10 night coastal runs in between call at Victoria, Astoria, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Monterey and Catalina. Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival sail them in April, May, September and October, and UnCruise does the San Juan Islands all summer. SmartCruiser shows every Pacific coastal sailing with taxes and fees included, and puts the sailings with SmartCruiser bonus credit at the top.

Which line for the Pacific coast?

Every Alaska line runs the coast twice a year; Princess and the small ships keep it going in between.

Timing

When to go

Coastal cruises happen when the fleet moves: April and May northbound, September and October southbound, with Princess year-round.

April to MayNorthbound: the Alaska fleet sails up from Los Angeles and San Diego via San Francisco and Victoria. Wildflowers in Santa Barbara, gray whales heading north.
June to AugustThe ships are in Alaska; Princess from San Francisco and UnCruise in the San Juans keep the coast alive. Warm, calm, orcas in the Salish Sea.
September to OctoberSouthbound: the busiest coastal months, harvest in wine country, San Francisco’s clearest weather, lower fares than Alaska peak.
November to MarchShort Los Angeles and San Francisco coastals and Ensenada weekends on Princess and Carnival; whale watching off Monterey.
Good to know

Pacific coastal cruise questions we answer every day

Do I need a passport?

For Vancouver one-ways, yes: a valid passport book. For round trips from a US port that stop in Victoria or Ensenada, US citizens can sail with a passport card or a birth certificate plus photo ID, but we recommend the passport in case you need to fly home from Canada or Mexico.

How rough is the coast?

Smoother than people expect in spring and fall, with a long Pacific swell on the sea days between Vancouver and San Francisco. Inside Puget Sound and the Santa Barbara Channel it is flat.

Will the ship sail under the Golden Gate?

Yes, every sailing that calls at San Francisco does, usually early morning or at sunset. Ask for a starboard cabin northbound or port southbound for the city view, and get on deck.

Which direction is better?

Northbound in spring ends in Vancouver with the Alaska season ahead; southbound in fall ends in Los Angeles or San Diego in sunshine. Prices are similar; choose by where you want to spend the extra nights.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Parking, hotels, gratuities, drinks packages and excursions are extra unless the line’s offer says otherwise.

What do the SmartCruiser picks mean?

They are sailings where booking through SmartCruiser gets you something you do not get booking direct: instant savings, bonus onboard credit, a Special SmartCruiser rate we hold on that sailing, or a senior, resident or police & fire fare that beats the best public price.
