About Carnival Encounter

Carnival Encounter sails year-round from Brisbane and joined Carnival in March 2025 when the P&O Cruises Australia brand was retired. Built by Fincantieri in 2002 as Star Princess, she became Pacific Encounter in 2021 and gained the Edge Adventure Park and Twin Racer waterslides in a 2023 refit. At 108,865 gross tons she carries 2,600 guests at double occupancy with 1,100 crew and measures 951 feet, a near twin of Carnival Adventure in Sydney.

Queenslanders know her well: the adults-only Byron Beach Club with pool, whirlpools and cabanas; the Edge Adventure Park with a zipline, cargo net and climbing wall; four pools, waterslides and the Oasis adults-only retreat; and restaurants such as Waterfront, Angelo’s, Dragon Lady and The Pantry. Carnival added Fahrenheit 555, Bonsai Sushi Express, Piano Bar 88, Playlist Productions, Family Feud Live, Camp Ocean and its deck parties, and a 2026 dry dock refreshed the Cloud 9 Spa with thermal suites.

In 2026-2027 she offers 3-day getaways and 4-day cruises to Airlie Beach, 6- to 10-day cruises to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific islands, and 12- and 14-day cruises to Fiji, all round trip from Brisbane. She suits Queensland families and friends who want a drive-to home port, short breaks and a familiar ship with Carnival’s program.

Carnival Encounter questions we answer every day

How big is Carnival Encounter?
Carnival Encounter measures 108,865 gross tons and is 951 feet long. Carnival lists 2,600 guests at double occupancy and 1,100 crew. She was built by Fincantieri in Italy and entered service in 2002 as Star Princess, sailed as Pacific Encounter for P&O Cruises Australia from 2021 and became Carnival Encounter in March 2025. Carnival Adventure in Sydney is her sister.
What changed when she became a Carnival ship?
Carnival kept the P&O favorites, including the Byron Beach Club, Edge Adventure Park, Waterfront, Angelo’s, Dragon Lady and The Pantry, and added Fahrenheit 555, Bonsai Sushi Express, Piano Bar 88, Playlist Productions, The Punchliner Comedy Club, Family Feud Live, Camp Ocean and the Fun Squad deck parties. A February 2026 dry dock in Singapore refreshed the Cloud 9 Spa, pools and hot tubs and added Carnival livery.
What is the Byron Beach Club?
It is an adults-only retreat on the top deck with a private pool, whirlpools, cabanas, lounge chairs and steward service. Guests in Byron Beach suites get complimentary access for the whole cruise, and other guests can buy a pass. It sits above the Oasis, the ship’s other adults-only pool area at the stern.
Which staterooms are best on Carnival Encounter?
Balcony and Aft-View Extended Balcony rooms suit the Whitsundays and the South Pacific islands. Byron Beach suites, from the Ocean Suite up to the single Presidential Suite, include Byron Beach Club access, breakfast at Angelo’s and in-suite extras. Porthole interiors keep a 3- or 4-day getaway affordable, and the standard Ocean Suite adds space without the club package.
Where does Carnival Encounter sail in 2026 and 2027?
She sails year-round from Brisbane. The schedule mixes 3-day getaways and 4-day cruises to Airlie Beach with 6- to 10-day cruises to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and other South Pacific islands, and 12- and 14-day cruises to Fiji. Carnival Luminosa joins her in Brisbane for the summer season, so Brisbane has two Carnival ships from December 2026.

The fare covers Waterfront, Angelo’s, Dragon Lady, The Pantry, pool-deck pizza and burgers, the shows, comedy club, pools, waterslides, Dive-In Movies, the fitness center and the kids clubs. Fahrenheit 555, Bonsai Sushi Express, Trattoria dinners, New Zealand Natural, Edge Adventure Park, Byron Beach Club passes, the spa, arcade, drinks and Wi-Fi are extra.
