About Viking Neptune

Viking Neptune was delivered by Fincantieri in Ancona in November 2022 as Viking’s ninth ocean ship and was named in Los Angeles in January 2023 by retired NASA astronaut and aquanaut Nicole Stott, midway through the 2022-2023 Viking World Cruise. She shares the fleet template, 47,800 gross tons, 745 feet, 930 guests in 465 all-veranda staterooms, and is notable as the first cruise ship to carry a small hydrogen fuel cell system, a 100-kilowatt test installation Viking uses to learn how hydrogen could power future ships.

She suits adults who want the destination to be the point of the trip. There is no casino and no children’s program; in their place are the Explorers’ Dome planetarium, a resident historian and guest lecturers, the Viking Resident Musicians playing classical music in The Living Room, the Nordic Spa with its snow grotto and an infinity pool off the Aquavit Terrace. One shore excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, beer and wine with lunch and dinner and the alternative restaurants are part of the fare.

Through 2026 and 2027 Viking lists Viking Neptune on Mediterranean itineraries of 8 to 15 days between Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice (Chioggia), Athens (Piraeus), Istanbul and Lisbon, including Journey to Antiquities, Greek Odyssey, Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities from Istanbul to Rome and the new 8-day Amalfi Coast, Africa & Iberia voyage from Rome to Barcelona.

  • Every one of the 465 staterooms has a private veranda
  • First cruise ship to test a hydrogen fuel cell, a 100-kilowatt system fitted at delivery
  • Explorers’ Dome planetarium with astronomy shows and lectures
  • Adults-only ship for guests 18 and over, with no casino on board
  • The Nordic Spa with a snow grotto, sauna, thermal pool and heated loungers, open to every guest
  • Infinity pool off the Aquavit Terrace and a Main Pool with a retractable roof
  • One included shore excursion in every port of call
  • Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant and The Chef’s Table at no extra charge

Viking Neptune questions we answer every day

How big is Viking Neptune?
Viking Neptune is 47,800 gross tons and 745 feet long, with 465 staterooms for 930 guests, every one with a private veranda. Viking classes her as a small ship, and her size lets her dock in the center of ports that bigger ships cannot reach. She was delivered in November 2022 as Viking’s ninth ocean ship and shares her layout with the rest of the ocean fleet.
What is special about Viking Neptune?
She is the first cruise ship to test hydrogen power for onboard operations. Fincantieri fitted a 100-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell module at delivery so Viking could study how hydrogen might be scaled up on future newbuilds. Guests do not see the system, but the ship also sailed Viking’s 138-day 2022-2023 World Cruise and was named in Los Angeles by astronaut Nicole Stott on the way.
Is Viking Neptune adults only?
Yes. All guests on Viking ocean ships must be 18 or older on the day they embark, and there are no facilities or programs for children. There is also no casino. The public rooms are given over to lounges, a library, lectures, classical music, the planetarium and the Nordic Spa rather than arcades and kids clubs, which keeps the ship quiet day and night.
What is included in the Viking Neptune fare?
Viking includes one shore excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, all onboard meals including Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffees and teas around the clock, 24-hour room service, access to the Nordic Spa thermal suite and fitness center, lectures and Destination Performances, self-service launderettes and port taxes and fees. Airfare, spa treatments, the Silver Spirits beverage package and The Kitchen Table are extra.
Which stateroom is the best choice on Viking Neptune?
Every stateroom has a veranda, so the differences are space and priority. Veranda and Deluxe Veranda rooms are 270 square feet and suit most couples; Deluxe earns earlier booking windows for excursions, restaurants and the spa. Penthouse Veranda rooms add a sitting area at 338 square feet, and Explorer Suites give you a separate living room, with the aft suites getting wraparound verandas over the wake.
Where does Viking Neptune sail in 2026 and 2027?
Viking lists her on Mediterranean voyages of 8 to 15 days between Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice (Chioggia), Athens (Piraeus), Istanbul and Lisbon, among them Iconic Western Mediterranean, Italian Sojourn, Journey to Antiquities, Greek Odyssey, Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities and the new Spain & Portugal Discovery. The new 8-day Amalfi Coast, Africa & Iberia voyage from Rome to Barcelona adds calls in North Africa in 2027.
