About Viking Astrea
Viking Astrea is the second of Viking’s hydrogen-powered ocean ships. Under construction at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, she was floated out on September 11, 2026 and is scheduled for delivery in May 2027. Like Viking Libra before her, she uses a hybrid propulsion system based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells from Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori, producing up to six megawatts, which Viking says will let her operate with zero emissions in environmentally sensitive areas.
She is otherwise a sister to Viking Vela, Vesta, Mira and Libra: about 54,300 gross tons, 784 feet long, 499 staterooms, all with verandas, for 998 guests. The rules are the same across the fleet: no casino, no guest under 18, no inside cabin and no formal night. One shore excursion in every port, all restaurants, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi and the Nordic Spa thermal suite are included, and the public rooms carry Viking’s Scandinavian design.
Viking says her inaugural season covers the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Published sailings begin in June 2027 from Venice and Rome (Civitavecchia), reposition from Barcelona to Bergen, then run the British Isles between London and Belfast through the summer before returning to the Mediterranean in October for Adriatic, Greek Isles and Istanbul voyages and Iberian sailings from Lisbon and Barcelona at year end. She suits travelers who want a brand-new ship in her first season.
