Nyhavn, Tivoli and the Little Mermaid on one flat, bike-friendly day

Copenhagen is the hub of Northern Europe cruising: many Baltic and Norway sailings start here, but hundreds more just call for the day, and that day is a gem. Where you dock matters: Langelinie puts you a 5 minute walk from the Little Mermaid and 30 flat minutes from Nyhavn, while the big Oceankaj (Ocean Quay) terminals sit about 5 miles north in Nordhavn and need the bus-plus-M4 metro combination, a taxi or the ship’s shuttle. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls at Copenhagen from every line, priced with taxes and fees included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.

Things to do in Copenhagen

Everything below is inside the old town or on the harbour walk, and the city is so flat that walking or a rental bike beats any bus.

Nyhavn and a canal tourThe painted 17th century harbour is the postcard; the budget blue Netto boats (about 60 DKK) and green Stromma boats (about 129 DKK) do a one hour loop past the opera house, Christianshavn and the Little Mermaid.
Tivoli GardensThe 1843 pleasure garden beside the central station: rides, gardens, concerts and restaurants. About 200 DKK to enter, rides extra; open from April, with Halloween and Christmas seasons. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
The Little MermaidSmaller than you expect and 5 minutes from the Langelinie pier, free, best before 9 a.m. or late afternoon when the coaches have gone. Walk on through Kastellet, the star-shaped fort.
Amalienborg changing of the guardThe royal guard marches from Rosenborg at 11:30 and changes at the palace square at noon every day; stand in the courtyard for free. A 15 minute walk from Nyhavn.
Rosenborg CastleChristian IV’s 1606 castle with the crown jewels in the basement vault, about 140 DKK, gardens free. Allow 90 minutes; book a time slot online on ship days.
Christiansborg and the Round TowerThe parliament palace tower is free with the best view of the spires; the 1642 Round Tower (about 40 DKK) has a spiral ramp you can walk up in 10 minutes.
Stroget and TorvehallerneEurope’s longest pedestrian street runs from the city hall to Kongens Nytorv; Torvehallerne food hall near Norreport does smorrebrod and pastries for a 100 DKK lunch.
Kronborg CastleHamlet’s castle at Helsingor, about 45 minutes north by train from Osterport (about 100 DKK each way) or a 4 to 5 hour ship tour at about $90 to $130; only on 9 hour plus calls.
Timing

September to Octoberhighs 55 to 63F, crisp and quieter, Tivoli’s Halloween season from mid October, bring layers and a rain shell
November to Aprilhighs 35 to 50F, dark and damp, very few ships; Tivoli’s Christmas market runs mid November to December for the handful of winter calls

Copenhagen questions we answer every day

Where do cruise ships dock in Copenhagen and how far is it to the center?

There are three places. Oceankaj (Ocean Quay) terminals 1 to 3 in Nordhavn take most big ships and sit about 5 miles north of the center; you cannot walk it. Langelinie, used by many premium ships on port-call days, is 5 minutes from the Little Mermaid and a flat 30 minute walk to Nyhavn. Nordre Toldbod, for small luxury ships, is 15 minutes on foot from Amalienborg. Check cmport.com about 48 hours ahead to see your berth.

How do I get from Oceankaj to town without the ship’s shuttle?

Take bus 25 (runs on ship days every 10 to 20 minutes) or bus 164 from the stop at terminal 1 to Orientkaj station, then the M4 metro to Kongens Nytorv for Nyhavn; about 20 minutes and about 24 DKK each way, paid by card at the ticket machine or in the DOT app. A taxi is about 175 to 215 DKK and 25 minutes. Ship shuttles run about $50 per person round trip, so public transit saves a family real money.

What currency do I need, and is English spoken?

Denmark uses the krone (about 7 DKK to the dollar) but the city is effectively cashless: tap a card or phone for buses, boats, museums and street food, and do not bother exchanging money. Everyone speaks English. Copenhagen is on Central European Time, 6 hours ahead of US Eastern. US phone plans with EU roaming work normally.

Is Copenhagen safe?

Very. Denmark is at the State Department’s lowest advisory level and Copenhagen is one of the safest capitals in the world. The real hazards are bikes: never step into a bike lane without looking, and keep valuables zipped in the Nyhavn and Stroget crowds.

What is the best excursion, and should I book through the ship?

On a first visit the city itself is the excursion: a canal boat, the changing of the guard and Tivoli fill a day and are easy on your own. Book through the ship only if you are docked at Oceankaj with a short call and want the castles at Helsingor or Hillerod, since the cruise line then guarantees your return.

Do I need a passport?

Yes. Every Northern Europe cruise requires a valid passport, and we recommend six months of validity past your return date. Denmark is in the Schengen zone, where the EU’s new biometric entry and exit checks are being phased in from 2026, so allow a few extra minutes at your first arrival.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes the cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions and gratuities are extra.
