About Laos Pandaw

Laos Pandaw is a ten-stateroom river ship built for the Upper Mekong in Laos, the stretch of river above Luang Prabang that Pandaw opened to overnight cruising in 2015. She started life as a 40-meter Mekong cargo barge and was converted on the riverbank in the Golden Triangle by a team from Mandalay, in time for her maiden voyage on 1 November 2015. At 148 feet with a draft of under five feet, she is sized for gorges, rapids and sandbanks that bigger ships cannot attempt.

Life on board follows the Pandaw pattern: a single dining room with al fresco bistro seating, an open-air lounge and bar on the upper deck, a 24-hour hospitality bar, an onboard bakery and a small library. All ten staterooms sit on the main deck, finished in teak and brass with a panoramic sliding door, individually controlled air conditioning, a Nespresso machine and a minibar that is restocked without charge. With only 20 guests, dinner is one sitting and the guides know everyone by name on day one.

In 2026-2027 Laos Pandaw sails The Laos Mekong, a ten-night expedition between Vientiane and Chiang Khong on the Thai border, upstream or downstream, from October through March. Days are built around Luang Prabang, the Pak Ou Buddha caves, Hmong and Khmu villages, the Xayaburi dam lock, an elephant sanctuary at Pak Beng and the Golden Triangle. She suits well-traveled couples and small groups who want Southeast Asia at village scale, not a floating hotel.

  • The original of Pandaw’s three Upper Mekong ships in Laos, joined by sisters Champa and Sabaidee Pandaw

  • Entrance fees, English-speaking guides, crew gratuities and all excursions included in the fare

Families and who it suits

Pandaw says its ships are not suitable for children under 8 because the open decks have no safety netting and the rail gaps are wide; children 8 to 17 are welcome with their own berth, and some Laos Mekong dates are flagged Family Friendly. There is no kids program.

Best for: Well-traveled couples and small groups who want Laos at village scale, with Luang Prabang, the Golden Triangle and every excursion included, on an intimate 20-guest ship.

Laos Pandaw questions we answer every day

How big is Laos Pandaw?
Laos Pandaw is a two-deck river ship of about 148 feet (45.17 meters) with a beam of 29 feet and a maximum draft of under five feet, carrying 20 guests in ten staterooms. Pandaw built her in 2015 from a converted Mekong cargo barge specifically for the Upper Mekong in Laos, where no larger ship can navigate the gorges and rapids above Luang Prabang.
Where does Laos Pandaw sail in 2026 and 2027?
She sails The Laos Mekong, a ten-night expedition between Vientiane and Chiang Khong on the Thai border, alternating upstream and downstream departures from October through March in both the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 seasons. Guests join by long-tail boat at Pak Lay after a hotel pickup in Vientiane, and the cruise ends with transfers to Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai via the Golden Triangle.
What are the cabins like on Laos Pandaw?
All ten staterooms are the same 150-square-foot main-deck grade, so there is no cabin hierarchy to navigate. Each has a panoramic sliding door onto the wrap-around promenade, teak and brass finishes, individually controlled air conditioning, a Nespresso machine, a complimentary minibar, premium mattresses with beds that convert from twin to double, a safe, a hair dryer, kimonos, slippers and yoga mats.
What is included in the fare on Laos Pandaw?
The fare covers all meals, every listed excursion with entrance fees, English-speaking guides, crew gratuities, transfers between Vientiane, the ship and Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai, local mineral water, jugged coffee, teas and tisanes and the cabin minibar. On the Laos Mekong, bar drinks such as local beer, spirits, soft drinks and wine are charged, with pre-bookable drinks packages available. Laundry, visas and flights are extra.
Is Laos Pandaw right for first-time river cruisers?
It suits travelers who want an expedition rather than a resort: there is no spa, pool or entertainment program, Wi-Fi reaches public areas only, and days are active with village walks and temple visits. In return you get one sitting at dinner, a crew who know every guest and a river that very few visitors to Laos ever see from the water. Pandaw does not take children under 8.
How does Laos Pandaw differ from Sabaidee Pandaw?
Both sail the same Laos Mekong route. Laos Pandaw is the smaller, original 2015 ship with ten main-deck staterooms of about 150 square feet and 20 guests. Sabaidee Pandaw, launched in 2018, is 171 feet long with 14 staterooms of about 170 square feet split across two decks and carries 28 guests. Choose by date and direction first; the onboard experience is the same.
