About American Jazz

American Jazz is the third ship in American Cruise Lines’ modern American Riverboat series, built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland and launched in 2020. It carries just 180 guests on six decks, with a five-story glass atrium at its heart and private balconies on every stateroom. The riverboat’s opening bow and retractable gangway let it nose straight onto a riverbank, so boarding and going ashore are quick and step-free in small river ports.

Staterooms run from 250 to 615 square feet, which American calls the largest on any river cruise ship, and every one has full-size furniture, a full bathroom and a furnished balcony. Life on board is relaxed and all-inclusive: open-seating meals in a restaurant with views from every seat, a daily cocktail hour with top-shelf spirits and hors d’oeuvres, a resident expert who gives talks on Lewis and Clark country, and live music each evening in the lounge.

American Jazz is based in the Pacific Northwest. Through 2026 and 2027 it sails the nine-day Columbia & Snake Rivers cruise between Portland, Oregon and Clarkston, Washington, the 16-day National Parks & Legendary Rivers cruise that pairs the river with guided days in Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and round-trip Columbia River Gorge cruises from Portland in late 2027. It suits travelers who want an American-flagged, all-inclusive river cruise with a hotel night and excursions built in.

American Jazz questions we answer every day

How big is American Jazz?
American Jazz is a 180-guest modern riverboat with six decks, built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland and launched in 2020. American Cruise Lines does not publish tonnage, length or crew figures for its riverboats. What it does publish is the stateroom size: every cabin has a private balcony and measures between 250 and 615 square feet, which the line calls the largest on any river cruise ship.
Where does American Jazz sail in 2026 and 2027?
American Jazz is based on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Its core itinerary is the nine-day Columbia & Snake Rivers cruise between Portland, Oregon and Clarkston, Washington, running spring through fall. It also operates the 16-day National Parks & Legendary Rivers cruise, which adds seven guided days in Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and round-trip Columbia River Gorge cruises from Portland in November 2027.
What is included in the fare on American Jazz?
American Cruise Lines is all-inclusive. The fare covers all meals and snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks around the clock, the daily cocktail hour, a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay with luggage service and transfer to the ship, at least one Featured excursion in every port, onboard enrichment and entertainment, Starlink Wi-Fi, gratuities, port charges and fees. Premium and Signature excursions cost extra.
Which staterooms are best on American Jazz?
Every stateroom has a balcony, so the choice is about size and deck. The 300-square-foot Premium Balcony rooms on Deck 4 and Deluxe Balcony rooms on Decks 2 and 3 suit most couples. The 615-square-foot Grand Suite on Deck 5 and Sky Suite on Deck 3 add a separate living room and a 25-foot balcony. Solo travelers get 250-square-foot Single Balcony rooms without paying a supplement.
What is dining like on American Jazz?
There is one restaurant with open seating at every meal, so you dine when and with whom you like, and every seat has a river view. Menus are American with a regional twist: Pacific Northwest salmon and seafood, grass-fed beef, asparagus, mushrooms, huckleberries and hazelnuts, with Washington and Oregon wines. Special diets are handled with advance notice, and snacks and drinks are available all day.
Is American Jazz good for families with children?
Not really. American Cruise Lines runs no children’s program, there are no kids clubs or connecting family cabins, and the onboard program of history talks, cocktail hours and evening music is built for adult travelers. Most guests are retired couples and solo travelers. If you are considering bringing a teenager, ask about the line’s age policy before booking.
