About American Melody

American Melody is the fourth ship in American Cruise Lines’ modern American Riverboat series and the first to carry the line’s updated interior design, with a lighter, more contemporary look than its older sisters. Built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding and launched in 2021, it holds 180 guests on five decks, with a four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship, an outdoor walking track on the top deck and the Back Porch Café for casual meals outdoors.

Every stateroom has a private balcony and measures 250 to 615 square feet, with full bathrooms and roomy closets. The ship was designed specifically for the Mississippi, with the opening bow and retractable gangway that let American’s riverboats dock in small river towns. On board, everything is included: open-seating dining with views from every seat, the daily cocktail hour, a resident historian, nightly live music and at least one excursion in every port.

American Melody spends 2026 and 2027 on the Mississippi River system. It sails the Lower Mississippi between New Orleans and Memphis, Highlights of the Mississippi round trips from New Orleans, the Upper Mississippi between St. Louis and St. Paul, the 16-day Grand Heartland cruise from St. Paul to New Orleans, the full Complete Mississippi and, new for summer 2027, Grand Ohio River cruises. It suits travelers who want the classic Mississippi in a modern, all-balcony riverboat.

American Melody is a 180-guest modern riverboat with five decks, launched in 2021 by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland. American Cruise Lines does not publish tonnage, length or crew numbers for its riverboats. Every stateroom has a private balcony and measures 250 to 615 square feet, and the ship has a four-story glass atrium, a top-deck walking track and the outdoor Back Porch Café.
Where does American Melody sail in 2026 and 2027?
American Melody works the whole Mississippi. In fall, winter and spring it sails Lower Mississippi River cruises between New Orleans and Memphis and Highlights of the Mississippi round trips from New Orleans. Summer brings Upper Mississippi cruises between St. Louis and St. Paul, Grand Ohio River cruises in July 2027, and the 16-day Grand Heartland cruise from St. Paul to New Orleans each October, plus the 22-day Complete Mississippi in June.
What is included in the fare on American Melody?
Everything on board: all meals and snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks 24 hours a day, the daily cocktail hour, enrichment talks and nightly entertainment, Starlink Wi-Fi, gratuities, port charges and fees. The fare also includes a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay with luggage service and a transfer to the ship, plus at least one Featured excursion in every port. Solo travelers have 250-square-foot Single Balcony rooms without a supplement.
What is new or different about American Melody?
American Melody introduced American Cruise Lines’ updated interior design, a cleaner, more contemporary look that the later ships American Symphony and American Serenade carried forward. It was also the first in the series with the new top-deck layout that adds an outdoor walking track, and it offers the Back Porch Café for casual meals outdoors, which the line says has been very popular with guests.
Is American Melody good for families with children?
Not really. American Cruise Lines runs no children’s program, there are no kids clubs or connecting family cabins, and the days are built around history talks, port excursions, the cocktail hour and evening music for adult travelers. Most guests are retired couples and solo travelers. If you are thinking of bringing a teenager, ask about the line’s age policy before you book.
