The classic week

  • Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Alaska in season
  • The widest choice of ships and staterooms inside the window
  • Fly in the day before: last-minute flights price better midweek

Best for: families, couples, anyone with a week to spare

Longer and quieter

8 nights and more

  • Panama Canal, Southern Caribbean, transatlantic repositionings and Europe shoulder season
  • Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, Oceania and Viking lead this list

When to go

Close-in sailings exist every week of the year; these are the months when the window is deepest.

January to early MarchAfter the holiday rush the Caribbean and Mexico lists are at their longest; the week after New Year and the first half of February are the sweet spot.
Late April to MaySpring break ends, families go home, and 7 night Caribbean weeks open up. Alaska’s first sailings join the list in May.
September to early NovemberHurricane season keeps the crowds away and the inventory high; Europe repositionings and Panama Canal transits sit in this window too.
DecemberThe first three weeks are quiet and close-in; the holiday sailings themselves sell out months ahead.
Good to know

Last-minute cruise questions we answer every day

How late can I book a cruise?

Most lines close online check-in two to three days before sailing and accept bookings up to about four days out; some take them the day before by phone. Inside the line’s final payment window the full fare is due when you book. We confirm the exact cutoff for your sailing and handle the passport details and check-in with you.

Are last-minute cruises really cheaper?

Sometimes, not always. Lines reprice unsold staterooms close to sailing, so some categories drop, but the cheapest categories often sell out first and flights get dearer every day you wait. The list above shows what the line is actually charging today, with taxes and fees included, so you can judge each sailing on its own.

Can I still pick my stateroom?

Usually, but the choice narrows. Close-in inventory is often sold as a guarantee: the line assigns a stateroom in the category you paid for or better, shortly before sailing. Tell us if you need a specific deck, a connecting stateroom or accessible features and we check what is actually left.

Do I need a passport for a last-minute Caribbean cruise?

A passport is the safest answer and is required for one-way sailings and any itinerary that starts or ends abroad. U.S. citizens on a round-trip cruise from a U.S. port can sail on closed-loop rules with a birth certificate and government photo ID, but a passport is what gets you home if you have to fly back early. We tell you the rule for your sailing before you book.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, gratuities, drinks packages and excursions are extra.

What do the SmartCruiser picks mean?

They are sailings where booking through SmartCruiser gets you something you do not get booking direct: instant savings, bonus onboard credit, a Special SmartCruiser rate we hold on that sailing, or a senior, resident or police & fire fare that beats the best public price.

Looking for a last-minute river cruise?

River sailings leaving in the next two weeks to 90 days on the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Douro, Mississippi and Mekong are on our last-minute river cruises page. River and ocean cruises are listed separately so each list stays easy to compare.
