About Oosterdam

Oosterdam is the second Vista Class ship, delivered by Fincantieri in August 2003 and named by Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. At 82,305 gross tons it carries 1,964 guests at double occupancy in 982 staterooms with a crew of about 812. A two-week dry dock in April 2025 rebuilt the thermal suite and salon, renovated the Rolling Stone Lounge and Neptune Lounge, added a co-ed sauna, enlarged the casino and created a new Effy jewelry lounge, so the ship is fresh ahead of its bigger transformation.

That transformation is Holland America Evolution. Oosterdam is the first of six ships through the program, entering the yard in Marseille in fall 2027 and returning October 31, 2027 with 76 added staterooms, 30 Solo Verandahs, two 900 sq ft Bridgeview Suites, 24 Vista Suites, a reimagined 1,550 sq ft Pinnacle Suite and the Grand Dutch Café by the atrium. Until then dining is the familiar Dining Room, Lido Market and Dive-In with Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto and Morimoto By Sea.

Oosterdam is Holland America’s main Mediterranean ship, sailing 7 to 14 day cruises from Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Piraeus, Trieste and Lisbon through fall 2026 and again from spring 2027. For winter 2026 to 2027 it heads to South America for 14 and 22 day Chilean fjords and Antarctica voyages between San Antonio (Santiago) and Buenos Aires. After its Evolution debut it crosses to Fort Lauderdale for 9 to 12 day Caribbean and Panama Canal cruises in winter 2027 to 2028. It suits travelers who want Europe and South America on a mid-sized ship.

  • Mediterranean seasons from Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Venice and Lisbon
  • South America and Antarctica voyages between Santiago and Buenos Aires in winter 2026-2027
  • First ship in the Holland America Evolution program, returning October 31, 2027

Oosterdam questions we answer every day

How big is Oosterdam?
Oosterdam measures 82,305 gross tons and is 936 feet long with 11 guest decks. It carries 1,964 guests at double occupancy in 982 staterooms with a crew of about 812. The Evolution renovation in fall 2027 adds 76 staterooms while keeping what Holland America calls its room at the rail, so capacity rises modestly without changing the ship’s mid-sized character.
When was Oosterdam built and last refurbished?
Oosterdam was built by Fincantieri in Italy, sailed its maiden voyage on August 3, 2003 and was named by Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. Its most recent dry dock was two weeks in the Bahamas in April 2025, which rebuilt the thermal suite, added a co-ed sauna and couples’ room, renovated the Rolling Stone Lounge and Neptune Lounge, expanded the casino and added a new Effy lounge and shop. The much larger Evolution renovation follows in Marseille in fall 2027.
What is Holland America Evolution and when does Oosterdam get it?
Evolution is a multiyear program of more than 500 million dollars across the four Vista Class and two Signature Class ships. Oosterdam goes first and returns October 31, 2027 with 76 added staterooms including 30 Solo Verandahs, two 900 sq ft Bridgeview Suites with wraparound balconies, 24 Vista Suites, a 1,550 sq ft Pinnacle Suite and the Grand Dutch Café. Sailings from September 11 to December 9, 2027 that were originally published were canceled to make room for the yard period.
Where does Oosterdam sail in 2026 and 2027?
Oosterdam sails the Mediterranean through fall 2026 from Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Piraeus, Trieste and Lisbon, crosses to South America and runs 14 and 22 day Chilean fjords and Antarctica voyages between San Antonio (Santiago) and Buenos Aires from November 2026 to March 2027, then returns to the Mediterranean for spring and summer 2027. After its Evolution debut on October 31, 2027 it sails Rome to Trieste, Athens and Barcelona, crosses to Fort Lauderdale and spends winter 2027 to 2028 on 9 to 12 day Caribbean and Panama Canal cruises.
What is included in the fare on Oosterdam?
The fare covers the Dining Room, Lido Market, Dive-In and snacks at the Crow’s Nest Café, plus World Stage shows, the live music venues, pools, fitness center and Kids Club where offered. Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, Morimoto By Sea, alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi and shore excursions are extra. SmartCruiser adds bonus onboard credit on sailings where Holland America allows it, something you will not get booking direct.
Which staterooms are best on Oosterdam?
Verandah staterooms are the best pick for the Chilean fjords, Antarctica and Greek island sail-aways. Signature Suites add a tub and room for four. Neptune Suites and the Pinnacle Suite include the renovated Neptune Lounge and priority tendering, which matters in tender ports such as Santorini. From late 2027 solo travelers get purpose-built Solo Verandahs and suite guests can choose the new Bridgeview Suites at the bow.
