About Volendam

Volendam is one of Holland America Line’s two R Class ships, the smallest and most traditional in the fleet, built by Fincantieri and in service since November 1999. At 61,214 gross tons with 1,432 guests at double occupancy in 716 staterooms and a crew of about 604, it carries roughly 35 percent fewer guests than a Pinnacle Class ship, which is why Holland America keeps it on the long voyages and small ports that bigger ships cannot reach. Its last listed major refurbishment was in 2019.

Life on board is unhurried: a two-level Dining Room, Lido Market, Dive-In grill, Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto and Morimoto By Sea evenings, the MIX piano bar, Ocean Bar and Explorer’s Lounge for live music, a Lido Pool under a retractable roof and an aft Sea View Pool. Volendam is one of the few ships with Lanai staterooms that open straight onto the wraparound Promenade deck, and 168 Vista Suites give it a high share of suites for its size.

It wraps up 2026 Canada and New England sailings from Boston and Montreal, crosses to a 14 day Eastern Caribbean holiday cruise over Christmas and New Year, then departs Fort Lauderdale on January 5, 2027 for the 129 day Grand World Voyage to 53 ports in 28 countries, also sold in segments. Ocean View

About 140 to 319 sq ft with a picture window or porthole, 364 of them across the Dolphin, Main and Lower Promenade decks; the backbone of the Grand Voyage inventory.

Lanai

Twenty-one Lanai staterooms of about 196 to 240 sq ft on the Lower Promenade deck with a sliding door onto the teak wraparound Promenade deck and reserved deck chairs outside; a Volendam specialty.

Vista Suite

About 297 to 379 sq ft with a private verandah, sitting area and bathroom with tub; 168 of them on the Verandah and Navigation decks make this the main balcony category on the ship.

Neptune and Pinnacle Suites

Neptune Suites run about 558 to 566 sq ft and the single Pinnacle Suite 1,296 sq ft with a dining room and large verandah; both include the Neptune Lounge with concierge, breakfast in Pinnacle Grill and priority embarkation and tendering.

Holland America says its R Class ships carry about 35 percent fewer guests than the Pinnacle Class, which gives Volendam an intimate feel and access to ports such as Montreal and the Amazon River.
When was Volendam built and last refurbished?
Volendam was built by Fincantieri in Italy and sailed its maiden voyage on November 12, 1999 as the third Holland America ship of the name. The line’s fleet fact sheet lists its last major refurbishment as November 2019. Holland America has said the R Class ships will continue on longer voyages such as the Grand Voyages, with regular scheduled dry docks keeping them up to date rather than the larger Evolution renovation planned for the Vista and Signature Class ships.

Which staterooms are best on Volendam?
