Curaçao: the candy-colored harbor you can walk into from the ship

Curaçao’s ships dock at the Mega Pier or Mathey Wharf in Willemstad, a UNESCO-listed Dutch harbor town painted in sherbet colors, and the famous Handelskade waterfront is a 10 minute walk away across the swinging Queen Emma pontoon bridge. Most cruisers wander Punda and Otrobanda on foot, then cab out to a beach like Mambo or Cas Abao, or take a boat to the Blue Room cave. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls here from every line, priced with taxes, fees and port expenses included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.

Things to do in Curaçao

A UNESCO harbor town at the end of the pier, 35 beaches on the west coast and some of the clearest water in the Caribbean.

Punda and the HandelskadeThe row of gabled Dutch houses in sherbet colors along the harbor, about a 10 minute walk from the Mega Pier across the Queen Emma Bridge (or the free ferry when it swings open). Floating market, the oldest synagogue in the Americas, cafes and duty-free shops; free to wander.
Mambo BeachThe closest proper beach, about 3 miles and about $25 per taxi each way, with clubs, restaurants, loungers (about $4) and a $3.50 entry. Calm, kid-friendly water behind a breakwater; the Sea Aquarium is next door.
Blue Room sea caveA boat trip up the west coast to a half-submerged cave that glows electric blue inside, with reef snorkeling on the way. About 3 to 4 hours, about $80 to $110 a person; good swimmers only.
Hato Caves and flamingosLimestone caves with stalactites, bat colonies and Arawak petroglyphs about 7 miles from the pier, usually paired with the flamingo salt pond at Jan Kok. About 3 hours, about $75 to $100 through the ship.
Cas Abao and Playa Porto MariThe west-coast beaches in the brochures: white sand, calm water, snorkeling off the beach and real facilities. About 40 minutes each way, so take a ship beach break (about $70 to $90 with chair) rather than a round-trip taxi that can run well over $100.
Curaçao Sea AquariumOpen-water aquarium with dolphin encounters, sea lion shows and a touch tank, right beside Mambo Beach about 3 miles from the pier. Admission about $20 adults, dolphin programs extra; an easy half day for families.
Klein CuraçaoAn uninhabited island 2 hours by catamaran with a lighthouse, a shipwreck and turtles in gin-clear water. About 8 to 9 hours and about $110 to $140 with open bar and lunch; only possible on a long port day and most boats leave before ships arrive, so check times.
Curaçao liqueur distilleryThe Landhuis Chobolobo mansion where the original blue liqueur is still made from the laraha orange, about 10 minutes by taxi from the pier. Tastings and tours about $15 to $25; a good rainy-hour stop.
Timing

When to go

Warm, dry and breezy all year and south of the hurricane belt; January to April is the dry season and busiest, October to December the showery season.

January to AprilHighs 82 to 86, steady trade winds, almost no rain and the fullest ships; the classic ABC island season.
May to JuneWarm and dry with lighter winds and fewer ships; the same beach weather at better value.
July to SeptemberHottest, mid to upper 80s and humid, still mostly dry; Curaçao sits far enough south that direct hurricanes are rare.
October to DecemberThe short wet season with brief showers, warm seas and a holiday rush in late December.
Good to know

Curaçao questions we answer every day

Where do ships dock in Curaçao and how far is town?

Most ships use the Mega Pier on the Otrobanda side, two berths that take the biggest ships; a few use Mathey Wharf inside St. Anna Bay, even closer to town. Both are walk-off. From the Mega Pier it is about half a mile past Rif Fort to the Queen Emma Bridge and Punda, 10 to 15 minutes at a stroll. When the pontoon bridge swings open for harbor traffic, a free ferry runs across.

How do I get around and what do taxis cost?

Taxis wait at the pier gate, charge per car (not per person) off a government rate card with no meter, so confirm the fare before you get in. Figure about $10 to $35 for rides around Willemstad and to Mambo Beach, more to the west-coast beaches, and about $20 to $25 an hour for a sightseeing taxi. Rideshare apps do not operate here.

What currency, language and time zone?

Curaçao switched to the Caribbean guilder in 2025, fixed at 1.79 to the dollar, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere and cards work in every shop and restaurant; expect change in guilders. Dutch, Papiamento and English are all official and English is spoken everywhere cruisers go. The island is on Atlantic Standard Time all year, matching the US East Coast in summer and an hour ahead in winter.

Is Curaçao safe?

Yes. The U.S. State Department rates Curaçao at its lowest advisory level. Willemstad is busy and well patrolled on ship days; the usual advice applies: keep valuables on the ship, watch your bag in crowds and on the beach, and use the licensed taxis at the pier.

What is the best excursion, and should I book it through the ship?

Walking Punda and Otrobanda costs nothing and is the thing you came for. After that, the Blue Room snorkel is the signature excursion and Cas Abao the signature beach; both are a 40 minute drive west, so book them through the ship or an operator with a back-to-ship guarantee. Mambo Beach and the distillery you can do on your own by taxi.

Do I need a passport?

On a round-trip cruise from a US port, US citizens can sail with a government photo ID plus an original birth certificate under the closed-loop rule, but we recommend a passport: Curaçao requires one to fly in or out, so it is the only way home if you miss the ship.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes the cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions and gratuities are extra.
