Fish tacos, a blowhole and Baja wine country, 90 minutes from the California border.
Ensenada is the port that makes the 3 and 4 night Baja cruises from Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego possible: ships tie up at the cruise pier beside the giant Mexican flag on the malecón, about a half-mile walk from Avenida López Mateos, the main strip of shops, bars and taco stands. Most cruisers either wander downtown for Hussong’s and street tacos or take a tour to La Bufadora blowhole or the Valle de Guadalupe wineries. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls at Ensenada from every line, priced with taxes and fees included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.
Three ways to do Ensenada
A quick weekend escape, a long weekend with Catalina, or Ensenada as the first stop on a longer Mexican Riviera cruise; each button filters the list of sailings below.
Friday to Monday from Long Beach or LA
- One sea day, one full day in Ensenada, home Monday morning; the classic first cruise
- Walk downtown for fish tacos and a margarita at Hussong’s, back on board by late afternoon
- Carnival from Long Beach and Royal Caribbean from Los Angeles run these most weeks of the year
Best for: first-timers, birthdays, bachelorette groups, families with short school breaks
Catalina Island plus Ensenada
- Adds a tender day at Avalon on Catalina Island before the Ensenada call
- Two very different days: golf carts and Mediterranean-style harbour, then Baja street food and wine
- Usually a Monday or Thursday departure, so it pairs with a long weekend
Best for: couples, repeat cruisers who want more than one port
Ensenada on a Mexican Riviera or coastal sailing
- Holland America from San Diego, Princess from San Francisco and Disney from San Diego add Ensenada to 5 to 11 night itineraries
- Gives you a full day for the Valle de Guadalupe wine tour without watching the clock
- Combine with Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta on the longest sailings
Best for: wine lovers, retirees, anyone who finds 3 nights too short

Ensenada questions we answer every day
Where do ships dock in Ensenada, and how far is town?
At the cruise pier in the working harbour, next to the giant Mexican flag on the malecón. Avenida López Mateos is about a half mile away, a flat 10 to 15 minute walk, or take the shuttle at the port gate for about $4 round trip. Taxis wait at the gate too.
How do I get to La Bufadora or the wineries?
Both are 30 to 45 minutes by road. The ship’s tours are the simplest way and guarantee you are back in time. Licensed taxis at the gate will quote a round trip with waiting time; agree on the price in dollars before you get in.
Do I need pesos?
No. Dollars are accepted everywhere in Ensenada and prices are usually posted in both. Bring small bills for tacos and tips; cards work in restaurants and larger shops but some add a surcharge. Ensenada keeps California time, and most US cell plans include Mexico.
Is Ensenada safe for cruise passengers?
The tourist zone between the port and López Mateos is busy, patrolled and well used to cruisers. The US State Department asks visitors to Baja California to exercise increased caution, so stay in the tourist areas, use licensed taxis or ship tours, and skip the nightlife crawl if your ship leaves at dusk.
What is the one excursion to book?
If you have never seen it, La Bufadora on a windy day is worth the ride; if you have, the Valle de Guadalupe wine tour is the better afternoon. Book either through the ship on a short call so the clock is their problem.
Do I need a passport for a 3 night Ensenada cruise?
On a round trip from a US port, US citizens may sail with a government photo ID plus an original birth certificate, but we strongly recommend a passport: if you miss the ship you cannot fly home without one. Non-US citizens need to check Mexico’s entry rules.
Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?
Yes. Every fare on this page includes the cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions and gratuities are extra.
