Falmouth, Jamaica cruise port

Falmouth: a Georgian port town between Montego Bay and Dunn’s River Falls.

Falmouth is the purpose-built cruise port on Jamaica’s north coast, opened in 2011 with two long piers that take the biggest ships afloat and a gated Georgian-style village of shops that opens straight onto the historic town. It sits between Montego Bay (about 40 minutes west) and Ocho Rios (about an hour east), so cruisers either make the run to Dunn’s River Falls or stay close for bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae, a zipline at Good Hope or a beach club 10 minutes away. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls at Falmouth from every line, priced with taxes and fees included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.

Three ways to do Falmouth

The falls, the river close to the pier, or a beach day; each button filters the list of sailings below.

Big excursion

Dunn’s River Falls, with or without Mystic Mountain

  • About an hour each way on the coast highway, so it is a 5 to 6 hour day; ship tours run about $90 to $130 a person including the $25 park entry as of 2026
  • Climb the 600 foot cascade hand in hand with a guide; water shoes required, rentable at the gate
  • Combos add the Mystic Mountain chairlift and bobsled or Dolphin Cove next door

Best for: first-timers, active families and anyone who wants Jamaica’s signature photo

Close to the pier

Martha Brae rafting and the Good Hope estate

  • The Martha Brae is 10 minutes from the port: an hour on a 30 foot bamboo raft poled by a licensed captain, about $85 to $115 a person including transfer
  • Chukka Good Hope, 20 minutes away, is a 2,000 acre Georgian plantation with ziplines, river tubing, ATVs and a rum tasting
  • Both are back at the ship with hours to spare, so you can still walk the town

Best for: couples, grandparents and anyone nervous about a long drive

Beach day

Blue Waters or Burwood Beach

  • Blue Waters Beach Club is about 10 minutes from the dock with loungers, a pool and lunch; passes about $40 to $60 a person
  • Burwood Beach is the local public beach just west of town; a small entry fee, basic facilities, calm water
  • Montego Bay’s Doctor’s Cave Beach is about 40 minutes away if you want the famous one

Best for: anyone who wants a short day, families with small kids, repeat visitors

Things to do in Falmouth

The best-value days stay within 20 minutes of the pier; the falls are worth the drive once.

Dunn’s River FallsJamaica’s signature climb, about an hour east near Ocho Rios; park entry about $25 adults and $17 children as of 2026, ship tours about $90 to $130 with transport and guide. Go with a tour, not a taxi, because of the drive time.
Martha Brae bamboo raftingThree miles of calm jungle river on a two-seat bamboo raft, 10 minutes from the port; about an hour on the water, roughly $85 to $115 a person with transfers, less if you taxi to the rafting village yourself.
Chukka Good Hope EstateZipline canopy tour, river tubing, ATV safari, bird aviary and a rum tasting on an 18th century estate 20 minutes from the pier; adventure passes about $90 to $150 depending on the activities.
Rose Hall Great HouseThe restored 1770 plantation house and its White Witch legend, about 20 minutes west toward Montego Bay; guided tours about $25 to $30, candlelit night tours on late-departure days.
Blue Waters Beach ClubThe closest proper beach, about 10 minutes from the dock: loungers, pool, jerk lunch and a swim; passes about $40 to $60 a person. Burwood public beach is the budget alternative.
Historic Falmouth walking tourStep out of the port gate onto Seaboard Street and you are in Water Square in 5 minutes: Georgian townhouses, the 1796 St. Peter’s church and the craft market. Guided heritage walks about $20 to $30; some blocks still show Hurricane Melissa damage.
Green Grotto CavesLimestone caverns and an underground lake about 35 minutes east on the way to Ocho Rios; 45 minute guided tour, entry about $20. A cool break on a hot day.
Timing

When to go

Hot all year with a dry winter and a wet, stormy late summer; nearly all the ship calls fall between November and April.

December to AprilHighs in the mid 80s, dry trade winds, calm seas; peak season with the most ships and the busiest Dunn’s River mornings.
May to JuneWarmer, upper 80s, with a short May rainy spell; fewer ships in port, so excursions feel half empty.
July to AugustHot and humid near 90 with afternoon showers; a handful of Royal Caribbean and Disney summer calls.
September to OctoberWettest months and the peak of hurricane season, when Melissa struck in 2025; few ships call and itineraries can change.
NovemberRain eases, temperatures settle in the mid 80s and the winter ships return; a quiet, good-value month.

Falmouth questions we answer every day

Where do cruise ships dock in Falmouth, and how far is town?

Ships tie up at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port, two long piers built for Oasis-class ships with a terminal building in between; there is no tendering. The piers open into a gated, Georgian-style shopping village with duty-free stores, bars and restaurants, and the gate itself opens onto Seaboard Street, a 5 minute flat walk to Water Square in the historic town. There is no beach within walking distance.

How do I get around, and what do taxis cost?

A licensed taxi stand with posted official fares sits just outside the port gate; use red-plate JUTA or JCAL taxis only and agree the fare before you get in. As of 2026 figure about $20 to $30 per car round trip to the Martha Brae or Blue Waters, about $80 to $100 per car to Montego Bay and back, and $150 or more for a private driver to Dunn’s River. Public buses are not recommended. Rental cars are a poor idea here: driving is on the left and the roads are slow.

What currency, language and time zone, and will my phone work?

The Jamaican dollar is official, but US dollars are accepted everywhere tourists go and most prices are quoted in them; bring small US bills for taxis, tips and the craft market. English is the language, with Jamaican patois alongside. Jamaica stays on Eastern Standard Time all year, so it is one hour behind Florida from March to November; check whether your ship stays on ship time. US carriers charge roaming here, so use ship Wi-Fi or an international day pass.

Is Falmouth safe for cruise passengers?

The U.S. State Department lists Jamaica at Level 2, exercise increased caution, as of January 2026, down from Level 3, citing crime away from resort areas and ongoing Hurricane Melissa recovery. The port is gated and patrolled, the historic town is a short, busy walk, and the excursion operators are vetted by the cruise lines. Stay in the tourist areas, use licensed taxis from the stand, keep valuables on the ship, and book through the ship if you worry about getting back on time from Ocho Rios or Montego Bay.

What is the best excursion, and should I book it through the ship?

If it is your first time in Jamaica, Dunn’s River Falls is the one to do, and because it is an hour each way we recommend booking it through the ship so the ship waits if traffic is bad. If you have been before, Martha Brae rafting or a Chukka Good Hope adventure are closer, cheaper and just as memorable, and those are safe to book independently. Luminous Lagoon, the glowing bay 10 minutes away, is only possible on the rare late-departure call because it needs darkness.

Do I need a passport for a cruise that stops in Falmouth?

On a round-trip cruise from a US home port (a closed-loop sailing), US citizens can board with a government-issued photo ID plus an original or certified birth certificate. We strongly recommend a valid passport anyway: it is the only document that gets you home by air if you miss the ship or have an emergency in Jamaica. Non-US citizens should check Jamaican entry rules for their nationality.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes the cruise fare, government taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions, gratuities and drinks packages are extra, and your SmartCruiser consultant can price those for you when you book.
