Montego Bay cruise port

Doctor’s Cave, jerk chicken and a bamboo raft: MoBay in one day.

Montego Bay is Jamaica’s second city and its oldest resort town, and cruise ships tie up at the Freeport pier on a man-made peninsula about 3 miles west of downtown and the Hip Strip. Most cruisers do one of two things: a short taxi to Doctor’s Cave Beach for the clearest water on the north coast, or a half-day excursion to the Martha Brae River, Rose Hall Great House or the Luminous Lagoon. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls at Montego Bay from every line, priced with taxes, fees and port expenses included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.

Three ways to do Montego Bay

A beach morning on the Hip Strip, a river or great-house excursion, or a ship-organized tour that takes the logistics off your plate; the buttons filter the list of sailings below.

Beach day

Doctor’s Cave Beach and the Hip Strip

  • About 10 minutes by taxi from the pier, roughly $7 to $10 per person each way on a shared bus
  • Admission about $8 for adults, half price for kids 12 and under, chairs and umbrellas extra
  • Walk Gloucester Avenue afterward for jerk chicken, Red Stripe and the Margaritaville water slide

Best for: families, first-timers, anyone who wants clear water and a short ride

Big excursion

Martha Brae rafting or Rose Hall Great House

  • Bamboo raft 3 miles of the Martha Brae with a local captain, about 75 minutes on the water, roughly 45 minutes east of the pier
  • Rose Hall Great House day tour about $30 per adult at the gate, with the White Witch legend thrown in
  • Both fit comfortably inside a 8 am to 5 pm call when booked through the ship or a licensed operator

Best for: couples, history buffs, repeat Jamaica visitors

Easy day

Let the ship run the day

  • Shore-excursion buses leave from inside the Freeport terminal, no haggling at the gate
  • Luminous Lagoon, Mystic Mountain and catamaran snorkel trips are all ship-sold here
  • If the tour runs late the ship waits for you; that matters on an island where traffic is unpredictable

Best for: nervous first-timers, groups, mobility-limited guests

Things to do in Montego Bay

The pier is a few miles from everything, so budget a taxi and pick one or two of these rather than all of them.

Doctor’s Cave BeachThe famous white-sand cove on the Hip Strip, calm and clear with a lifeguard, bar and changing rooms. About $8 per adult to enter, chairs and umbrellas about $6 each. A 10 minute taxi from the pier, about $7 to $10 per person each way.
Martha Brae River raftingTwo people per 30 foot bamboo raft, poled by a licensed captain for about 75 minutes through the Trelawny countryside. Ship and independent tours run about $100 to $160 per person with transport; the village is about 45 minutes east of the pier.
Rose Hall Great HouseRestored 1770s plantation house tied to the legend of Annie Palmer, the White Witch. Guided day tour about $30 per adult and $10 per child at the gate; it sits about 20 minutes east of the pier on the way to the airport.
Luminous Lagoon at Glistening WatersOne of a handful of places on earth where the water glows when you stir it. Boat trips run after dark, so it only works on ships with a late departure; tours from Montego Bay run about $75 to $95 with transport, about $40 for the boat alone.
Hip Strip and MargaritavilleGloucester Avenue is the walkable strip of bars, craft stalls and jerk stands between Doctor’s Cave and Aquasol. Margaritaville has the water slide and ocean trampoline; lunch and a drink about $25 to $35 per person.
Catamaran snorkel and party cruiseTwo to three hour sails out of the bay with a snorkel stop on the reef inside Montego Bay Marine Park, open bar and reggae. Ship-sold at about $70 to $100 per person; the boats leave from the Hip Strip or straight from the pier.
Mystic Mountain bobsled (Ocho Rios)The rainforest bobsled, chairlift and zip lines are 90 minutes east, so this one is ship-tour only. Expect $130 or more per person and most of the day on a bus; worth it for teens who have already done the beach.
Craft market and in-bond shoppingThe Old Fort Craft Park and Harbour Street market sell carvings, coffee and rum; bargain politely. Duty-free shops are inside the terminal for Blue Mountain coffee, Appleton rum and Tortuga rum cake on the way back aboard.
Timing

When to go

Montego Bay is warm every month; the dry, breezy season runs December to April, which is also when the pier is busiest, and hurricane season runs June to November with the biggest storm risk from August to October.

December to AprilHighs in the low to mid 80s, lows near 70, little rain and the calmest sea; the busiest cruise months and the best weather of the year.
May to JuneMid to upper 80s with afternoon showers starting in May; fewer ships, lower fares and the water is already bathtub warm.
July to AugustHot and humid, highs near 90, short heavy showers; the start of the peak hurricane window, so keep an eye on itinerary changes.
September to NovemberThe wettest months and the heart of hurricane season (Hurricane Melissa hit western Jamaica in October 2025); ships return in numbers by mid November as the rain tapers off.
Good to know

Montego Bay questions we answer every day

Where do cruise ships dock in Montego Bay and how far is town?

Ships dock at the Montego Freeport cruise pier on a peninsula about 3 miles west of downtown; you walk straight off the ship into a terminal with duty-free shops, a tourist desk and a taxi stand. Nobody walks to town (it is a hot, shadeless road); a shared taxi to downtown or the Hip Strip runs about $7 to $10 per person each way and a shuttle bus about $2 to $5.

How do I get around and what do taxis cost?

Use the licensed JUTA and JCAL taxis with red license plates that line up inside the terminal; they are the only ones allowed back through the port gate. Fares are per person and set before you leave: about $7 to $10 to Doctor’s Cave Beach, about $15 to $20 to Rose Hall. Agree the price and the pickup time with the driver, and keep small US bills.

What currency, language and time zone, and will my phone work?

US dollars are accepted everywhere tourists go and prices are quoted in them; change may come in Jamaican dollars. English is the official language. Jamaica stays on Eastern Standard Time all year, so it matches the ship in winter and is an hour behind Florida in summer. US phones roam at international rates, so set up a travel plan or use the ship’s Wi-Fi.

Is Montego Bay safe for cruise passengers?

The U.S. State Department rates Jamaica Level 2, exercise increased caution, as of its June 2026 update, mainly for crime away from the resort areas. The cruise terminal, Hip Strip and the big excursion sites are patrolled and see thousands of visitors a day without incident. Stay in the tourist areas, use licensed red-plate taxis, skip public buses and book excursions through the ship if you worry about getting back on time.

What is the best excursion, and should I book it through the ship?

For a first visit, Doctor’s Cave Beach on your own is the best value; for a signature Jamaica memory it is Martha Brae bamboo rafting. Book river trips, Rose Hall and the Luminous Lagoon through the ship or a licensed operator: the roads east are slow and a ship-sold tour guarantees the ship waits for you.

Do I need a passport for a cruise that stops in Montego Bay?

On a round-trip cruise from a U.S. port, U.S. citizens may sail with a government-issued photo ID plus an original or certified birth certificate (the closed-loop rule), but we strongly recommend a passport: if you miss the ship or need to fly home from Jamaica, nothing else gets you on the plane. Non-U.S. citizens need a passport and any visas their nationality requires.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on SmartCruiser includes the cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions, drinks and gratuities are extra.
