St. Kitts cruise port

St. Kitts: a sugar-train ride, a hilltop fortress and a beach by Nevis.

St. Kitts is the small, green island that cruisers rank among their favorites: Port Zante drops you two minutes from the pastel streets of Basseterre, and the whole island is a 30 minute drive end to end. Most cruisers ride the narrow-gauge Scenic Railway around the old sugar estates, climb Brimstone Hill Fortress or head down the peninsula to Cockleshell Bay with Nevis across the strait. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls at St. Kitts from every line, priced with taxes, fees and port expenses included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.

Things to do in St. Kitts

Everything is 10 to 30 minutes from Port Zante, and licensed taxi fares are set by law, so two stops in a day is easy.

St. Kitts Scenic RailwayThe last railway in the West Indies: 18 miles of the old sugar-cane line around the north coast in open-top double-decker cars, with a rum punch and a choir, plus a bus leg back. About 3 hours, about $135 to $150 a person; it sells out, so book early.
Brimstone Hill FortressThe Gibraltar of the West Indies, a UNESCO World Heritage fortress 800 feet up on the northwest coast, about 30 minutes from the pier. Admission about $15 per adult; a licensed taxi there and back with 2 hours on site is about $55 per car.
Cockleshell BayThe best beach on the island at the far end of the southeast peninsula, with calm water, Reggae Beach Bar and Nevis two miles across the strait. Taxi about $40 per car (1 to 4) each way or about $10 a person shared; agree a pickup time.
Frigate Bay and South FriarsThe close beaches: South Frigate Bay with its strip of beach bars about 10 minutes away (about $12 to $16 per car) and the quieter South Friars Bay about 15 minutes (about $28 per car, or $12 from Frigate Bay).
Romney Manor and Caribelle BatikA 17th century estate once owned by Thomas Jefferson’s great-grandfather, with gardens, a 400 year old saman tree and the Caribelle Batik workshop. About 20 minutes from the pier, about $3 admission; combined with Brimstone Hill on most tours.
Timothy Hill lookoutThe viewpoint 10 to 15 minutes south of town where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet with the peninsula and Nevis beyond; the photo stop on every island tour and a quick $10 to $12 taxi detour on the way to the beaches.
Catamaran sail and snorkelSail the strait toward Nevis to snorkel the reefs and shipwrecks off the peninsula, with lunch and open bar, boarding at the Port Zante marina. About 4 to 5 hours, about $90 to $120 a person through the ship.
Sky Safari ziplineFive ziplines through the rainforest canopy above Wingfield Estate next to Romney Manor, the longest about 1,350 feet. About 3 hours with the drive, about $90 to $110 through the ship.

Which lines call at St. Kitts?

Port Zante can berth two Oasis-class ships, so St. Kitts is on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity itineraries from Florida as well as the San Juan loops.

Timing

When to go

St. Kitts is 80 to 88 degrees all year with trade winds; December to April is the dry, busy season, summer brings brief showers, and hurricane season runs June to November with September the riskiest month.

December to AprilHighs 82 to 85, lows around 72, the driest months and the calmest beaches; peak season with two or three ships at Port Zante most days.
May to JuneMid 80s with a short shower some afternoons, the St. Kitts Music Festival in late June and far fewer ships; the best-value window.
July to AugustUpper 80s and humid with brief downpours; the rainforest is lush and early hurricane season is usually quiet.
September to NovemberThe wettest months and the peak of hurricane season, so itineraries can change; November dries out and the winter fleet returns.
Good to know

St. Kitts questions we answer every day

Where do cruise ships dock in St. Kitts and how far is town?

Ships dock at Port Zante on the Basseterre waterfront, which has two piers (the second opened in 2019) and can take the largest Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships. The port gates open onto downtown: The Circus and Independence Square are a flat 5 to 10 minute walk. Nobody tenders on a normal day; only when the piers are full does a ship anchor and tender to the marina beside the terminal. A new terminal building is under construction at Port Zante as of 2026.

How do I get around and what do taxis cost?

Licensed taxis wait at the dispatch stand at the port exit and the fares are set by government regulation per car for 1 to 4 people, quoted in US dollars: about $12 to $16 to Frigate Bay, about $28 to South Friars, about $40 to Cockleshell Bay, about $55 for a 2 hour Brimstone Hill run and about $100 for a 4 hour full-island tour, with a per-person rate when there are 5 or more. Confirm the fare and the pickup time before you set off; there is no Uber. Shared vans to the beaches charge about $10 a person each way.

What currency, language and time zone?

The Eastern Caribbean dollar is fixed at EC$2.70 to US$1 and US dollars are accepted everywhere, with change sometimes in EC. English is the language. St. Kitts is on Atlantic Standard Time all year, which matches US Eastern Daylight Time in summer and is an hour ahead of the East Coast in winter; most US phones roam here but check your plan.

Is St. Kitts safe for cruise passengers?

The U.S. State Department rates St. Kitts and Nevis at its lowest advisory level, and Basseterre, Frigate Bay and the beaches are used to thousands of visitors a day. Use the licensed taxis from the port stand, keep valuables on the ship and do not leave bags unattended on the beach.

What is the best excursion, and should I book it through the ship?

The Scenic Railway is the signature experience and it sells out, so book it through the ship early. Brimstone Hill and Romney Manor are easy with a licensed taxi at the regulated rate and do not need a ship tour. Cockleshell Bay is a taxi ride with a fixed pickup time; just allow 30 minutes back to the pier.

Do I need a passport for a cruise that stops in St. Kitts?

On a round-trip cruise from a US port, including San Juan, US citizens can sail under the closed-loop rule with a government photo ID plus an original or certified birth certificate. We recommend a passport anyway: St. Kitts requires one to fly in or out, so it is your only way home if you miss the ship or have to leave early.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on SmartCruiser includes the cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions, drinks and gratuities are extra.
