Victoria cruise port

The evening in Victoria that makes a Seattle Alaska cruise feel like two trips.

Victoria is the last stop on almost every round-trip Alaska cruise from Seattle, and ships dock at Ogden Point, about 1.5 miles from the Inner Harbour, usually from late afternoon until around midnight. Most cruisers walk or shuttle downtown for the lit-up Parliament Buildings and the Empress, or ride out to Butchart Gardens for its illuminated evening show. SmartCruiser lists every cruise that calls at Victoria from every line, priced with taxes and fees included, with the sailings that carry SmartCruiser bonus onboard credit or instant savings at the top.

Three ways to do Victoria

Walk the Inner Harbour on your own, ride out to Butchart Gardens, or make Victoria part of a longer Pacific coast cruise; each button filters the list of sailings below.

Inner Harbour on foot

Walk to the harbour, tea at the Empress

  • About 25 minutes on foot from Ogden Point along Dallas Road and through James Bay, or a shuttle bus for about $15 USD round trip
  • The Parliament Buildings light up after dark and the Fairmont Empress sits right on the water
  • Fisherman’s Wharf and its floating homes are a 10 minute walk from the pier

Best for: evening calls, couples, anyone who wants to skip a tour

Big excursion

Butchart Gardens after dark

  • About 14 miles north of the pier; ship tours run 3 to 4 hours and the garden stays open late in summer with illuminated paths
  • General admission alone is about CAD 44 in summer 2026, so the tour price is mostly the coach
  • Ships warn the tour may not run in early May or mid September because of daylight

Best for: garden lovers, photographers, first-timers

Longer voyage

Victoria on a 10 to 14 night Pacific coast cruise

  • Sailings from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Alaska stop in Victoria in daylight, often for a full day
  • Daytime calls open up whale watching from the harbour, Craigdarroch Castle and the Royal BC Museum
  • Fewer sea days feel empty when the coast is this close

Best for: retirees, West Coast flyers, people who hate airports

Things to do in Victoria

Most calls are evening calls, so we lead with what works after 6 pm.

Inner Harbour and Parliament lightsThe free one. Walk or shuttle to the causeway, watch the street performers, then stay for the Parliament Buildings outlined in thousands of bulbs after sunset. Allow 2 hours including the walk.
Butchart Gardens55 acres of sunken, rose and Japanese gardens in an old quarry about 14 miles from the pier. Ship tours run 3 to 4 hours for roughly $90 to $130; summer evenings are illuminated and Saturday nights in July and August add fireworks.
Afternoon tea at the EmpressThe Fairmont Empress has poured tea since 1908. About CAD 89 per person as of 2026, up to CAD 135 with champagne; reserve ahead, the last seatings fill on ship days.
Fisherman’s WharfFloating homes, fish and chips from Barb’s and harbour seals begging at the dock, a 10 minute walk from Ogden Point. Cheap, quick and right on the way downtown.
Whale watchingThree hour Zodiac or covered-boat tours from the Inner Harbour for about $125 to $140 per adult, after orcas and humpbacks in the Salish Sea. Only practical on daytime calls.
Craigdarroch CastleA 39 room Victorian mansion built by a coal baron, about 2 miles from the pier; allow 90 minutes and a short taxi ride. Open until early evening in summer.
Royal BC Museum and Beacon Hill ParkThe museum’s First Peoples and natural history galleries sit beside the harbour; Beacon Hill Park, with the world’s tallest free-standing totem pole and Mile Zero of the Trans-Canada Highway, is on the walk from the ship.
Horse-drawn carriage or pedicabTally-Ho carriages wait at the harbour for 30 to 60 minute tours through James Bay and Beacon Hill Park; pedicabs do the same for less. A good pick when your feet are done.
Timing

When to go

Victoria has the mildest, driest summers in Canada; the cruise season runs April to October and July and August are busiest.

April to MaySeason opens; highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s, showers likely, gardens at their spring peak. Fewer ships and lower fares.
June to AugustHighs 65 to 78F, the driest months of the year, daylight past 9 pm so evening calls still feel like afternoon. Peak crowds and peak Butchart illuminations.
SeptemberHighs in the mid 60s, still mostly dry, school is back and fares soften; our favorite value month.
OctoberLast calls of the year, highs in the upper 50s, more rain; the final 2026 call was October 18.

Victoria questions we answer every day

Where do cruise ships dock in Victoria, and how far is downtown?

At Ogden Point in the Breakwater District, two deep-water berths with no tendering. The Inner Harbour is about 1.5 miles away: a 20 to 30 minute walk along Dallas Road and through James Bay, a shuttle bus for about $15 USD round trip (as of 2026, bought on board or at the pier), or a 10 minute taxi.

Why does my Seattle Alaska cruise stop in Victoria at night?

US law (the Passenger Vessel Services Act) says a foreign-flagged ship on a round trip from a US port must call at a foreign port, and Victoria is the closest one to Seattle. Ships arrive on the last evening, usually 6 or 7 pm to around midnight, so plan on 4 to 5 hours ashore.

Do I need Canadian dollars?

The currency is the Canadian dollar and cards work everywhere, including the shuttle and most taxis. Many shops near the harbour take US dollars but give change in CAD. US cell plans usually include Canada; check yours. Victoria is on Pacific time, the same as Seattle.

Is Victoria safe at night?

Yes. The walk from Ogden Point through James Bay is residential and well lit, the harbour is busy with cruisers until the ships leave, and taxis and shuttles run until the last all-aboard.

Is Butchart Gardens worth it on a short evening call?

If you love gardens, yes: the summer illuminations are unique and the ship’s coach gets you there and back inside about 3.5 hours. Book it through the ship; a private tour that misses all-aboard is an expensive mistake.

Do I need a passport for Victoria?

On a round trip from a US port, US citizens can sail with a government photo ID plus an original birth certificate, but we recommend a passport, and you will clear Canadian border officers before going ashore. Non-US citizens need to check Canada’s entry rules.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every fare on this page includes the cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, shore excursions and gratuities are extra.
