About American Constitution

American Constitution is the second of American Cruise Lines’ two Constellation Class coastal ships, launched in 2018 by Chesapeake Shipbuilding as a sister to American Constellation. With a traditional bow for coastal water and just 170 guests on six decks, it was designed for the sheltered inland waterways of Alaska and Puget Sound, where it can tuck into small harbors and sit close to glaciers that big ships only view from a distance.

Staterooms are among the largest on any ship this size, from 230-square-foot singles to the 375-square-foot Veranda Suites, most with private balconies. The Cascade Lounge on Deck 3 hosts the daily cocktail hour, talks and evening music, small midship lounges suit a book or a card game, the restaurant on the Main Deck has 270-degree views, and the sun deck carries a putting green and shaded lounge seating. A fitness center is on Deck 5 and an elevator serves every guest deck.

In 2026 and 2027 American Constitution splits its year between Washington and Alaska. Spring and fall bring eight-day Puget Sound & San Juan Islands round trips from Tacoma and the 15-day Northwest National Parks cruise, while summer is spent in Southeast Alaska on round trips from Juneau, Alaska National Parks cruises from Fairbanks and the 16-day Alaska Inside Passage between Juneau and Tacoma. It suits travelers who want a small, US-flagged ship with everything included.

American Constitution questions we answer every day

How big is American Constitution?
American Constitution is a 170-guest coastal ship with six decks, launched in 2018 by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland as the second Constellation Class ship. American Cruise Lines does not publish tonnage, length or crew figures. What it does publish is stateroom size: rooms run from 230-square-foot singles to 375-square-foot Veranda Suites, and most have private balconies. An elevator serves every guest deck.
Where does American Constitution sail in 2026 and 2027?
It splits the year between Washington and Alaska. From late March through mid-May and again from mid-September into October it sails eight-day Puget Sound & San Juan Islands round trips from Tacoma, plus the 15-day Northwest National Parks cruise in September. In mid-May it repositions to Juneau on the 16-day Alaska Inside Passage cruise, then sails Southeast Alaska round trips from Juneau and Alaska National Parks cruises from Fairbanks all summer before returning to Tacoma in early September.
What is included in the fare on American Constitution?
American Cruise Lines is all-inclusive. The fare covers all meals and snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks around the clock, the daily cocktail hour, a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay with luggage service and transfer to the ship, at least one Featured excursion in every port, naturalist talks and nightly entertainment, Starlink Wi-Fi, gratuities, port charges and fees. Premium and Signature excursions such as flightseeing cost extra.
Which staterooms are best on American Constitution?
For balcony views of glaciers and whales, the 300-square-foot Premium Balcony rooms on Decks 4 and 5 and Deluxe Balcony rooms on Decks 2 and 3 suit most couples. The 375-square-foot Veranda Suites on Decks 3 and 4 are the largest rooms, and the Sky Suite on Deck 5 has the highest view. Budget-minded guests can take a 275-square-foot Deluxe Waterview with a picture window, and solo travelers have both balcony and window singles.
What is the difference between American Constitution and American Constellation?
They are sister ships of the same Constellation Class, both 170 guests with a traditional bow for coastal water. American Constellation launched in 2017 and American Constitution followed in 2018. Both have the Main Deck restaurant with 270-degree views, a Deck 3 lounge, sun deck with putting green and a Deck 5 fitness center. Which you sail on depends on the itinerary and date; American Constitution is the one assigned to Alaska and Puget Sound in 2026 and 2027.
Is American Constitution good for families with children?
Not really. American Cruise Lines runs no children’s program, there are no kids clubs or connecting family cabins, and the onboard program of naturalist talks, the cocktail hour and evening music is built for adult travelers. Most guests are retired couples and solo travelers. If you are considering bringing a teenager, ask about the line’s age policy before booking.
