About Angkor Pandaw

Angkor Pandaw is the sister of Katha Pandaw, delivered from the same Vietnamese yard in 2013. The one difference is deliberate: an enclosed, air-conditioned panorama dining room, built at the request of an American charterer, which Pandaw now finds useful in the cold northern Vietnamese winters. She carries 32 guests in 16 teak-and-brass staterooms, ten on the main deck and six on the upper deck, with a draft of just 1.1 meters.

She started on the Mekong in 2015 and was then used to open Pandaw’s Halong Bay and Red River program, where she remains. Days bring semi-buffet breakfast and lunch and seated theme dinners in the panorama dining room, an open-air lounge bar and a 24-hour hospitality bar, a library and a fair-trade shop. Mountain bikes are carried for exploring villages on your own, and excursions by coach, rowing boat and on foot are included with local guides.

In 2026 and 2027 Angkor Pandaw is Pandaw’s only ship on the ten-night Halong Bay and Red River expedition from Tuan Chau in Halong Bay to Viet Tri, with Hanoi airport transfers at both ends, taking in Lan Ha Bay, Hai Phong, Tam Coc and Ninh Binh, Hanoi, Bat Trang and Duong Lam. She suits travelers who have done the Mekong and want a quieter, more rural northern Vietnam from the water.

  • Sister to Katha Pandaw with the K class addition of an enclosed, air-conditioned panorama dining room
  • Only 32 guests in 16 teak-and-brass staterooms of about 170 square feet
  • Ultra-shallow 1.1 meter draft for the Red River, Kinh Thay River and Halong Bay channels
  • Quality mountain bikes on board for independent village exploring
  • Open-air lounge bar, observation deck, library and fair-trade shop
  • Included excursions by coach, rowing boat through the Tam Coc caves and on foot with local guides
  • Hanoi airport transfers included at both ends of the voyage
  • Only ship on Pandaw’s ten-night Halong Bay and Red River expedition in 2026 and 2027

Families and who it suits

Pandaw says its ships are not suitable for children under 8 because the open rails have no safety netting; older children share a cabin with an adult, and Pandaw designates certain school-holiday departures as family friendly with child offers.

Best for: Repeat Pandaw and Mekong guests who want a small-ship route through Halong Bay and rural northern Vietnam, with the comfort of an air-conditioned dining room in the cooler months.

Angkor Pandaw questions we answer every day

How big is Angkor Pandaw?
Angkor Pandaw is a K class ship 45.84 meters (about 150 feet) long with a 9 meter beam and a draft of 1.1 meters, listed by Pandaw at 611 gross tons. She carries 32 guests in 16 staterooms, ten on the main deck and six on the upper deck. Pandaw’s description says she was delivered in 2013 while its stats line gives 2012; she was built in Vietnam as a sister to Katha Pandaw.
Where does Angkor Pandaw sail in 2026 and 2027?
She is Pandaw’s ship for the ten-night Halong Bay and Red River expedition, boarding at Tuan Chau in Halong Bay after a coach transfer from Hanoi and ending at Viet Tri with a transfer to Hanoi airport or city. Stops include Lan Ha Bay and Viet Hai village, Hai Phong and the Kinh Thay River, Hai Duong, Tam Coc and Ninh Binh, Hanoi, Bat Trang and Duong Lam. Dates are published on Pandaw’s site by season.
What makes Angkor Pandaw different from Katha Pandaw?
Only the dining room. Katha was built without a formal indoor dining room; Angkor got an enclosed, air-conditioned panorama dining room at the request of an American charterer. Pandaw notes it makes her the better ship for the cold northern winters of the Red River. Otherwise the hull, draft, cabin design and open-air lounge are the same.
What is included in the fare on Angkor Pandaw?
Main meals, all guided excursions and entrance fees, English-speaking guides, crew gratuities, transfers between Hanoi airport and the ship at both ends, local mineral water, jugged coffee, teas and tisanes, a welcome cocktail and the cabin minibar. Bar drinks, wine, laundry, visas, port dues and tips to local guides and drivers are extra. SmartCruiser adds bonus onboard credit on sailings where Pandaw allows it, not available when you book direct.
What are the cabins like on Angkor Pandaw?
All 16 staterooms are about 170 square feet in teak and brass with a French window opening onto the promenade deck, twin or double beds, individually controlled air conditioning, a Nespresso machine, a stocked minibar, glass bottled water, expedition flasks, a mini safe, kimonos and slippers and a yoga mat, with nightly turndown and 24-hour laundry service. There are no suites or triples.
Is the Red River cruise rougher than the Mekong?
The route mixes a sheltered bay cruise through Halong and Lan Ha with narrow rivers and canals, so the water is calm, but it is more rural and the ship is smaller than the Mekong P class vessels. Winters can be cool and gray, which is why the air-conditioned dining room matters, and excursions involve walking, rowing boats and coaches. It is a good second Pandaw trip rather than a first river cruise.
