About Carnival Luminosa

Carnival Luminosa began life in 2009 as Costa Luminosa, built by Fincantieri in Italy, and joined Carnival in September 2022 after a refit that added Carnival dining and bars. At 92,720 gross tons with 2,260 guests at double occupancy, 926 crew and 12 decks, she is one of the smaller ships in the fleet, with a balcony-heavy layout, the three-level Luminosa Theatre and a Cloud 9 Spa with thermal suites and a hydrotherapy pool.

Carnival uses her as a seasonal ship. From late April to late September 2026 she is based in San Francisco, alternating 10-day Alaska cruises to Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Prince Rupert and Endicott Arm with 4-day Baja Mexico long weekends to Ensenada. In September 2026 she crosses to Japan on an 18-night Carnival Journeys voyage, then repositions from Singapore to Brisbane in late November for the Australian summer.

The 2026-2027 Brisbane season runs 3- to 14-day cruises to the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga, including a 14-day Carnival Journeys voyage tracing the Mutiny on the Bounty story. On April 6, 2027 she sails a 23-day Transpacific Journeys cruise from Sydney to San Francisco via Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii, and 10-day Alaska cruises resume from May 3, 2027. She suits couples and empty-nesters who prefer a mid-size ship and longer, scenic itineraries.

Families and who it suits

Camp Ocean runs programs for ages 2 to 11 in three groups (Penguins 2 to 5, Stingrays 6 to 8, Sharks 9 to 11), with Circle C for ages 12 to 14 and Club O2 for 15 to 17; this is a smaller ship without a waterpark or roller coaster, so it draws fewer families than the Excel ships.

Best for: Couples and empty-nesters on the West Coast or in Queensland who want a mid-size ship on 10-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco, a South Pacific summer from Brisbane or a long transpacific crossing.

Carnival Luminosa questions we answer every day

How big is Carnival Luminosa?
Carnival Luminosa measures 92,720 gross tons and is 964 feet long, with 12 guest decks, 1,130 staterooms, 2,260 guests at double occupancy and 926 crew. She was built by Fincantieri in Italy in 2009 as Costa Luminosa and joined Carnival in 2022, so she is a mid-size ship compared with the 180,000-ton Excel Class.
Where does Carnival Luminosa sail in 2026 and 2027?
She sails from San Francisco from late April to late September 2026 on 10-day Alaska cruises and 4-day Baja Mexico cruises, crosses to Japan in late September, then spends December 2026 to March 2027 in Brisbane sailing to the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga. A 23-day Sydney to San Francisco voyage departs April 6, 2027, and Alaska cruises resume May 3, 2027.
What do the Alaska cruises from San Francisco include?
The 10-day round trips visit Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, with scenic cruising in Endicott Arm, which Carnival substituted for Tracy Arm Fjord in 2026. Departures are on Mondays or Thursdays. The longer length means more sea days than a 7-day Seattle cruise, which suits guests who want the scenery without flying to the Pacific Northwest.
Which staterooms are best on Carnival Luminosa?
Balcony rooms make up most of the ship and are the natural pick for Alaska and the South Pacific; Aft-View Extended Balcony rooms are the ones to watch for. Cloud 9 Spa rooms include thermal suite access. Grand Vista Suites with wraparound balconies are the top category, and Interior with Picture Window rooms are a budget-friendly way to get daylight.
What is included in the fare?
The fare covers the Dining Room, Lido Marketplace, Pizzeria del Capitano, the deli, Swirls, Playlist Productions shows, the comedy club, Family Feud Live, Dive-In Movies, the pools, Serenity and the kids clubs. Fahrenheit 555, Bonsai Sushi Express, the Chef’s Table, JavaBlue Café, drinks, the spa and Wi-Fi are extra.
Does Carnival Luminosa have a waterpark or roller coaster?
No. She was built for Costa and received Carnival dining, bars and branding rather than the WaterWorks, SportSquare or BOLT found on newer ships. What she offers instead is a quieter pool deck with three pools, a jogging track, the Serenity retreat and one of the larger spas in the fleet, which fits the longer scenic itineraries she sails.
