Signature Class ship for Caribbean winters, Panama Canal and Alaska Glacier Discovery.
Best for: Travelers who want a classic mid-sized Holland America ship for longer Caribbean and Panama Canal itineraries in winter and one-way Alaska Glacier Discovery cruises in summer. Sails from Fort Lauderdale, Vancouver, Whittier (Anchorage) in 2026 and 2027.
Nieuw Amsterdam is the second of Holland America Line’s two Signature Class ships, a slightly larger development of the Vista Class that joined the fleet on July 4, 2010 and was named by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands in Venice. At 86,700 gross tons it carries 2,106 guests at double occupancy in 1,053 staterooms with a crew of about 874, and its public rooms are themed around the city of New York, from the atrium art to the Explorations Café library.
Dining follows the Holland America pattern: a two-level Dining Room, Lido Market buffet, Dive-In poolside grill and New York Pizza & Deli included, with Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind, Canaletto, Morimoto By Sea and a Morimoto sushi counter as specialty options. Evenings center on World Stage shows, the Rolling Stone Lounge, Billboard Onboard and The Dam Band, and the Lido Pool has a retractable roof. Nieuw Amsterdam is one of six ships slated for the Holland America Evolution renovation, with its date still to be announced.
From October 2026 to April 2027 Nieuw Amsterdam sails from Fort Lauderdale on 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruises, a 9 day Southern Caribbean and ABC Islands itinerary developed with The HISTORY Channel, and 12 day Panama Canal and Windward and Leeward Islands voyages. In spring it transits the Panama Canal and spends summer 2027 on 7 day Glacier Discovery cruises between Vancouver and Whittier, the gateway for Denali cruisetours. It suits travelers who want a traditional mid-sized ship with sea days and a strong lineup of longer Caribbean itineraries.

Nieuw Amsterdam questions we answer every day
How big is Nieuw Amsterdam?
Nieuw Amsterdam measures 86,700 gross tons and is 936 feet long with 12 guest decks. It carries 2,106 guests at double occupancy in 1,053 staterooms, with a crew of about 874. That puts it between the Vista Class ships and the larger Pinnacle Class, big enough for a full theater and four specialty restaurants but still able to dock at smaller Caribbean and Alaska ports.
When was Nieuw Amsterdam built and last refurbished?
Nieuw Amsterdam was built by Fincantieri in Italy, joined the fleet on July 4, 2010 and was named by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands in Venice. Holland America’s fleet fact sheet lists its last major refurbishment as December 2017. It is one of six ships named for the Holland America Evolution program, a bow-to-stern renovation that begins with Oosterdam in 2027; Nieuw Amsterdam’s date has not been announced.
Where does Nieuw Amsterdam sail in 2026 and 2027?
From October 2026 to April 2027 Nieuw Amsterdam sails from Fort Lauderdale on 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruises, a 9 day Southern Caribbean and ABC Islands itinerary with Half Moon Cay, and 12 day Panama Canal and Windward and Leeward Islands voyages. In summer 2027 it runs 7 day Glacier Discovery cruises between Vancouver and Whittier with Glacier Bay, College Fjord and Hubbard Glacier, linked by Panama Canal and Pacific Coast repositioning sailings.
Which staterooms are best on Nieuw Amsterdam?
Verandah staterooms are the best choice for Alaska and the Panama Canal, where a private balcony pays off on scenic days. Ocean View staterooms on the lower decks suit budget-minded cruisers who like the wraparound Promenade deck. For more space pick a Signature Suite, and for the Neptune Lounge, concierge and priority tendering choose a Neptune Suite or one of the two 1,357 sq ft Pinnacle Suites.
What is included in the fare on Nieuw Amsterdam?
The fare covers the Dining Room, Lido Market, Dive-In and New York Pizza & Deli, World Stage shows, the live music venues, pools, fitness center and Kids Club where offered. Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind, Canaletto, Morimoto By Sea, alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi and shore excursions are extra. SmartCruiser adds bonus onboard credit on sailings where Holland America allows it, something you will not get booking direct.
Is Nieuw Amsterdam good for families?
Nieuw Amsterdam is a premium ship aimed mainly at adults, but Alaska Glacier Discovery weeks and holiday Caribbean cruises draw plenty of families. Kids Club programs run for ages 3 to 17 on most sailings, the High Score! game room and the covered Lido Pool work in any weather, and the Alaska cruises connect to Denali cruisetours that older kids enjoy.
