About Viking Libra

Viking Libra is the ship Viking describes as the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions. Under construction at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, she was floated out in March 2026 and is scheduled for delivery in November 2026. Her hybrid propulsion is based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells supplied by Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori, producing up to six megawatts, enough to let her run emission-free in environmentally sensitive areas.

In every other respect she is a sister to Viking Vela, Vesta and Mira: about 54,300 gross tons, 784 feet long, 499 staterooms, all with verandas, and 998 guests. There is no casino, no guest under 18 and no inside cabin. One shore excursion in every port, all restaurants, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi and the Nordic Spa thermal suite are included, and the public rooms carry the same Scandinavian design, from the two-deck Explorers’ Lounge to the Infinity Pool at the stern.

Her inaugural season opens in early December 2026 from Athens (Piraeus) with Greek Isles and Western Mediterranean sailings, then she heads north in January 2027 for a winter of Northern Lights voyages between London and Tromsø, a summer between Bergen, Stockholm and London, and a fall return to Lisbon, Barcelona, Rome and Athens. She suits travelers who want to be among the first on a landmark ship without giving up the quiet Viking style.

Viking Libra questions we answer every day

What makes Viking Libra different from other Viking ships?
Her propulsion. Viking and Fincantieri describe Viking Libra as the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship able to operate with zero emissions, using a hybrid system based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells rated at up to six megawatts. The layout, staterooms and restaurants are otherwise the same as her sisters Viking Vela, Vesta and Mira.
How big is Viking Libra?
About 54,300 gross tons and 784 feet long, with 499 staterooms for 998 guests at double occupancy. Viking classifies her as a small ship, like every ship in its ocean fleet, designed to dock in the center of ports that larger ships cannot reach.
When does Viking Libra start sailing?
Viking has scheduled delivery from Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard for November 2026, following her float out in March 2026. Her first guest sailings are listed from Athens (Piraeus) in early December 2026, followed by a Barcelona round trip over the holidays and Northern Lights voyages from London beginning in January 2027. Dates for a brand-new ship can shift, so check the live sailing list below.
Is Viking Libra adults only?
Yes. Viking ocean ships carry no guests under 18, and there is no casino, no kids club and no inside staterooms. Evenings center on the theater, Torshavn, the Explorers’ Lounge and the Living Room rather than production shows and nightclubs.
What is included in the fare on Viking Libra?
A veranda stateroom, one shore excursion in every port, all restaurants including Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, the Nordic Spa thermal suite and self-service laundry. Optional excursions, premium drinks, spa treatments and the Kitchen Table cooking school are extra.
Where does Viking Libra sail in 2027?
After the Mediterranean in December 2026, she sails 11-night Northern Lights voyages between London and Tromsø from January to March 2027, then works between London, Bergen and Stockholm through the summer. In September she returns south via Lisbon for Western Mediterranean sailings from Barcelona and Rome and Greek Isles voyages from Athens through December 2027.
