About Viking Lyra

Viking Lyra is the ocean ship Viking named in August 2025 when it opened bookings for 2027-2028, scheduled to join the fleet in 2028 from Fincantieri in Italy. She follows Viking Libra and Viking Astrea in the 998-guest series that began with Viking Vela: about 54,300 gross tons, 784 feet long and 101 feet wide, with 499 staterooms, every one with a private veranda. Viking classifies her, like all its ocean ships, as a small ship.

On board she will match her sisters: no casino, no guest under 18, no inside cabin and no formal night. The fare includes one shore excursion in every port, every restaurant from The Restaurant and World Café to Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi and the Nordic Spa thermal suite. Public rooms follow Viking’s Scandinavian design, from the two-deck Explorers’ Lounge at the bow to the Infinity Pool at the stern.

Viking says her inaugural season will be spent in the Mediterranean and Scandinavia. Published 2028 sailings open in June from Venice, Rome (Civitavecchia) and Barcelona, reach Lisbon and London, work the British Isles between London and Belfast through the summer, and return south via Bergen to Barcelona and Venice in September. She suits travelers 18 and over planning ahead for a first-season sailing on a brand-new ship.

Viking Lyra questions we answer every day

When will Viking Lyra sail?
Viking announced Viking Lyra in August 2025 as its newest ocean ship, scheduled to join the fleet in 2028 with an inaugural season in the Mediterranean and Scandinavia. Published first-season sailings begin in June 2028 from Venice and Rome. Delivery dates for a ship still being built can change, so check the live sailing list below.
How big is Viking Lyra?
About 54,300 gross tons, 784 feet long and 101 feet wide, with 499 staterooms for 998 guests at double occupancy. She belongs to the slightly larger series that began with Viking Vela in 2024, and Viking classifies her as a small ship like the rest of its ocean fleet.
Is Viking Lyra adults only?
Yes. Viking ocean ships carry no guests under 18, and there is no casino, no kids club and no inside staterooms. Evenings center on the theater, Torshavn, the Explorers’ Lounge and the Living Room rather than production shows and nightclubs.
What is included in the fare on Viking Lyra?
A veranda stateroom, one shore excursion in every port, all restaurants including Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, the Nordic Spa thermal suite and self-service laundry. Optional excursions, premium drinks, spa treatments and the Kitchen Table cooking school are extra.
Where does Viking Lyra sail in her first season?
Published 2028 sailings start in June with Venice to Rome, Rome to Barcelona and Barcelona to Lisbon legs, then a Lisbon to London voyage. July and August are British Isles sailings between London and Belfast, followed by London to Bergen, Bergen to Barcelona and Barcelona to Venice in September 2028.
Is Viking Lyra hydrogen powered like Viking Libra and Astrea?
Viking’s own announcements name Viking Libra and Viking Astrea as its hydrogen-powered ships, and Viking says its newest ships are built so they can be retrofitted with new propulsion technology as it matures. Cruise industry reports say Viking Lyra will share that zero-emission capability; Viking has not yet published full technical details for her.

Facts checked against Viking: Viking Lyra, Viking: What Viking Is Not, Viking: Destination-focused dining, Cruise Industry News: Viking opens 2027-28, names next ship Viking Lyra on October 13, 2026. Ship details change with refurbishments; your SmartCruiser advisor confirms the current layout when you book.
