About Viking Orion

Viking Orion entered service in 2018 as Viking’s fifth ocean ship and was named in Livorno, Italy, by retired NASA astronaut Dr. Anna Fisher. She shares the fleet template, 47,800 gross tons, 745 feet, 930 guests in 465 all-veranda staterooms, but she was the first Viking ship to carry the Explorers’ Dome, a 26-seat 7K planetarium above the Explorers’ Lounge where a resident astronomer runs shows, lectures and stargazing sessions.

Like her sisters she is for adults who want to see places rather than ride waterslides. There is no casino and no children’s program. Days are built around an included shore excursion in every port, lectures from a resident historian, classical music from the Viking Resident Musicians, the Nordic Spa with its snow grotto and the infinity pool off the Aquavit Terrace. Wi-Fi, beer and wine with lunch and dinner and the alternative restaurants are included in the fare.

Viking deploys Viking Orion on the Pacific. For 2027 Viking lists her on 15-day Australia & New Zealand voyages between Sydney and Auckland, 17 days from Bali to Sydney on Komodo & the Australian Coast, Southeast Asia and Far Eastern Horizons sailings linking Bangkok, Bali, Hong Kong and Tokyo, the 23-day North Pacific Passage from Tokyo to Vancouver and 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruises between Vancouver and Seward.

  • Explorers’ Dome, the first planetarium on a Viking ship, with a resident astronomer and 7K shows
  • Every one of the 465 staterooms has a private veranda
  • Adults-only ship for guests 18 and over, with no casino on board
  • The Nordic Spa with a snow grotto, sauna, thermal pool and heated loungers, open to every guest
  • Infinity pool off the Aquavit Terrace and a Main Pool with a retractable roof

  • Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant and The Chef’s Table at no extra charge
  • Alaska, Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand itineraries for 2027

Staterooms and suites

Veranda Stateroom

270 square feet including the veranda, with a king-size bed, 42-inch TV with movies on demand, heated bathroom floor and Freyja toiletries; the entry category on Viking, and because every room has a veranda it is a comfortable base for scenic cruising in Alaska or the fjords of New Zealand.

Penthouse Veranda Stateroom

338 square feet including the veranda, with a larger sitting area, a stocked mini-bar and earlier priority for excursions, restaurants and the spa.

Penthouse Junior Suite

405 square feet including the veranda, with a separate sitting area, a larger bathroom and the earliest booking priority below the full suites.

Explorer Suite

Two-room suites of 611 to 778 square feet at the stern, with wraparound verandas, or 648 to 704 square feet forward, with a separate living and dining area and a larger bathroom.

Owner’s Suite

One per ship at 1,297 square feet, with a boardroom seating 12 that has the first oceangoing vapor-light fireplace, a private library and wine and music collections curated by Chairman Torstein Hagen, an ocean-view dry sauna and a pantry for room service and hosted events.

Viking Orion questions we answer every day

How big is Viking Orion?
Viking Orion is 47,800 gross tons and 745 feet long, with 465 staterooms for 930 guests, every one with a private veranda. Viking classes her as a small ship, and her size lets her dock in the center of ports that bigger ships cannot reach. She entered service in 2018 as Viking’s fifth ocean ship and shares her layout with the rest of the ocean fleet.
What is the Explorers’ Dome on Viking Orion?
The Explorers’ Dome is a 26-seat planetarium forward on the upper level of the Explorers’ Lounge, the first on any Viking ship. It projects 7K films such as Journey to Space and Under the Arctic Sky on its domed ceiling, a resident astronomer gives lectures and runs stargazing sessions with a telescope on the top deck, and the shows and 3D glasses are included.
Is Viking Orion adults only?
Yes. All guests on Viking ocean ships must be 18 or older on the day they embark, and there are no facilities or programs for children. There is also no casino. The public rooms are given over to lounges, a library, lectures, classical music, the planetarium and the Nordic Spa rather than arcades and kids clubs.
What is included in the Viking Orion fare?
Viking includes one shore excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, all onboard meals including Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffees and teas around the clock, 24-hour room service, access to the Nordic Spa thermal suite and fitness center, lectures and Destination Performances, self-service launderettes and port taxes and fees. Airfare, spa treatments, the Silver Spirits beverage package and The Kitchen Table are extra.
Where does Viking Orion sail in 2026 and 2027?
Viking lists her in 2027 on Australia & New Zealand voyages between Sydney and Auckland, Komodo & the Australian Coast from Bali to Sydney, Bangkok, Bali & Beyond, Southeast Asia & Hong Kong, Far Eastern Horizons from Hong Kong to Tokyo, the North Pacific Passage from Tokyo to Vancouver and a summer of 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruises between Vancouver and Seward, with longer combination voyages of up to 93 days.
Which stateroom is the best choice on Viking Orion?
Every stateroom has a veranda, so the differences are space and priority. Veranda and Deluxe Veranda rooms are 270 square feet and suit most couples; Deluxe earns earlier booking windows for excursions, restaurants and the spa. Penthouse Veranda rooms add a sitting area at 338 square feet, and Explorer Suites give you a separate living room, with the aft suites getting wraparound verandas over the wake, a treat on Alaska glacier days.
