About Viking Star

Viking Star launched Viking’s ocean fleet in 2015 and set the template that every sister ship has followed since. Built by Fincantieri in Italy and named in Bergen, Norway, she measures 47,800 gross tons and 745 feet, carries 930 guests in 465 staterooms, and every one of those staterooms has a private veranda. Viking classes her as a small ship, which lets her dock in the heart of ports that larger vessels have to tender into or skip altogether.

She suits curious adult travelers who want the destination to be the point of the trip. There is no casino, no waterpark and no kids club. Instead there are guest lecturers and a resident historian, Viking Resident Musicians playing classical music in The Living Room, the Nordic Spa with its snow grotto, and an infinity pool off the Aquavit Terrace. One shore excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, beer and wine with lunch and dinner and the alternative restaurants are all part of the fare.

Through 2026 and 2027 Viking lists Viking Star on Mediterranean itineraries of 8 to 15 days between Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice (Chioggia), Athens (Piraeus), Istanbul and Lisbon, including the new Spain & Portugal Discovery and Spain, Portugal & the Mediterranean voyages. Viking also lists her on an 18-day South America & the Chilean Fjords sailing between Buenos Aires and Santiago (Valparaiso) in 2026.

  • One included shore excursion in every port of call
  • Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant and The Chef’s Table at no extra charge

Viking Star questions we answer every day

How big is Viking Star?
Viking Star is 47,800 gross tons and 745 feet long, with 465 staterooms for 930 guests, every one of them with a private veranda. Viking classes her as a small ship, and her size lets her dock in the center of ports that bigger ships cannot reach. She entered service in 2015 as Viking’s first ocean ship and is identical in layout to her eight sisters.
Is Viking Star adults only?
Yes. All guests on Viking ocean ships must be 18 or older on the day they embark, and there are no facilities or programs for children. There is also no casino. The result is a calm ship where the public spaces are given over to lounges, a library, lectures, classical music and the Nordic Spa rather than arcades and kids clubs.
What is included in the Viking Star fare?
Viking includes one shore excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, all onboard meals including Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, specialty coffees and teas around the clock, 24-hour room service, access to the Nordic Spa thermal suite and fitness center, lectures and Destination Performances, self-service launderettes and port taxes and fees. Airfare, spa treatments, the Silver Spirits beverage package and The Kitchen Table are extra.
Which stateroom is the best choice on Viking Star?
Every stateroom has a veranda, so the differences are space and priority. Veranda and Deluxe Veranda rooms are 270 square feet and suit most couples; Deluxe earns earlier booking windows for excursions, restaurants and the spa. Penthouse Veranda rooms add a sitting area at 338 square feet, and Explorer Suites give you a separate living room, with the aft suites getting wraparound verandas over the wake.
Where does Viking Star sail in 2026 and 2027?
Viking lists her on Mediterranean voyages of 8 to 15 days between Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice (Chioggia), Athens (Piraeus), Istanbul and Lisbon, including Iconic Western Mediterranean, Italian Sojourn, Journey to Antiquities, Greek Odyssey and the new Spain & Portugal Discovery. An 18-day South America & the Chilean Fjords itinerary between Buenos Aires and Santiago (Valparaiso) is also listed for 2026.
What is the Nordic Spa like?
The Nordic Spa follows the Scandinavian ritual of alternating heat and cold: a sauna, a snow grotto with real snow, a thermal pool, a cold plunge and heated ceramic loungers. Access to the thermal suite and fitness center is included for every guest on Viking Star, and Viking has won Cruise Critic’s Best Spa award every year since its ocean ships debuted in 2015. Treatments in the spa are extra.
