About Explorer of the Seas

Explorer of the Seas is a Voyager Class ship that entered service in 2000. A 2015 revitalization added the FlowRider surf simulator, virtual-balcony interior staterooms, Izumi, Giovanni’s Table and a 3D theater, and a 2023 dry dock finally brought The Perfect Storm Typhoon and Cyclone racer slides to Deck 13. At about 137,000 gross tons she carries 3,286 guests at double occupancy on 14 guest decks, with the Royal Promenade, Studio B ice rink and rock climbing wall that define the class.

She is a good match for couples and families who like a mid-size ship with a European flavor: a London-style Crown & Kettle Pub, the 1950s-style R Bar, Boleros for salsa, the Viking Crown Lounge up top and an adults-only Solarium. Shows include Wild, Cool & Swingin’, Fast Forward and the Spirits of the Seasons ice show, and Explorer Dunes mini golf, a sports court and outdoor movie nights fill the sea days.

In 2026 Explorer spends the summer in Ravenna (Venice) on 7-night Greek Isles and Adriatic cruises, crosses to Port Canaveral for winter 2026-27 4 to 9 night Bahamas and Caribbean sailings with Perfect Day at CocoCay, then returns to Europe for summer 2027 from Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Ravenna and Athens before a Fort Lauderdale Caribbean season from November 2027. SmartCruiser adds bonus onboard credit on her sailings where Royal Caribbean allows it, not available booking direct.

Explorer of the Seas questions we answer every day

How big is Explorer of the Seas?
Explorer of the Seas is a Voyager Class ship of about 137,308 gross tons and 1,020 feet in length. Royal Caribbean’s fact sheet lists 3,286 guests at double occupancy, 4,290 guests in total, 1,185 crew, 14 guest decks and 1,643 staterooms. She is mid-sized for the fleet, with the same Royal Promenade and ice rink layout as Adventure, Mariner, Navigator and Voyager of the Seas.
Where does Explorer of the Seas sail in 2026 and 2027?
Summer 2026 is spent in Ravenna, the port for Venice, on 7-night Greek Isles and Adriatic cruises. She crosses the Atlantic in late October 2026 to Port Canaveral for winter 4 to 9 night Bahamas and Caribbean sailings, returns to Europe for summer 2027 with 7-night cruises from Barcelona, Rome, Ravenna and Athens, then starts a Fort Lauderdale Caribbean season in November 2027.
Has Explorer of the Seas been refurbished?
Yes. A 2015 revitalization added the FlowRider, virtual-balcony interiors, a 3D theater, Izumi and Giovanni’s Table and raised capacity. A planned 2020 Royal Amplified makeover was cancelled by the pandemic, but a 2023 dry dock in Cadiz added The Perfect Storm Typhoon and Cyclone racer slides on Deck 13, and a routine 2025 dry dock refreshed public areas.
Which staterooms are best on Explorer of the Seas?
For Greek Isles and Mediterranean sailings a balcony is worth it; midship rooms on Decks 7 to 9 are the quietest. Virtual-balcony interiors are a clever budget option with a live ocean view on screen, and Promenade View interiors look down on the Royal Promenade. Families should compare the larger ocean-view rooms that sleep up to six against connecting balconies.
What is included in the fare on Explorer of the Seas?
The Main Dining Room, Windjammer, Café Promenade and Sprinkles are included, as are the production shows, ice show, waterslides, FlowRider, rock climbing wall, mini golf, sports court, pools, Solarium, outdoor movies and Adventure Ocean. Chops Grille, Giovanni’s Table, Izumi, Johnny Rockets, Chef’s Table, alcohol and spa treatments are extra.
Is Explorer of the Seas good for families?
She works well for families with school-age kids and teens, who get the FlowRider, racer slides, ice skating, mini golf, rock wall and the Adventure Ocean program. Families with toddlers should note there is a kids’ pool but no Splashaway Bay aqua park, which Adventure, Mariner and Navigator of the Seas do have.
