About Freedom of the Seas

Freedom of the Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world when it debuted in 2006 and remains a fleet favorite after its 2020 Royal Amplified refit. That makeover added The Perfect Storm twin waterslides, Splashaway Bay, a two-story The Lime & Coconut bar with rooftop sun deck, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, El Loco Fresh, Izumi, Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade and reimagined Adventure Ocean and teen spaces. At 156,271 gross tons it carries 3,926 guests at double occupancy in 1,963 staterooms.

The Freedom Class layout is easy to navigate: a Royal Promenade with pubs and cafes down the middle, a FlowRider, rock climbing wall, mini golf and sports court up top, an ice rink in Studio B and a classic Royal Theater staging the Marquee and Once Upon A Time productions. With fewer guests than an Oasis Class ship, Freedom feels relaxed while still offering most of the big-ship thrills.

Freedom of the Seas sails from Miami through April 2027 on short Bahamas getaways to Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau, where guests can add a day at Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, plus some 5 night sailings adding Bimini. From May to October 2027 the ship repositions to Southampton, England for Northern and Western Europe cruises. It suits first-timers, families and anyone who wants a quick Royal Caribbean weekend from South Florida.

Freedom of the Seas questions we answer every day

How big is Freedom of the Seas?
Freedom of the Seas is 156,271 gross tons and 1,111 feet long with 14 guest decks out of 15 total. It carries 3,926 guests at double occupancy in 1,963 staterooms with a crew of about 1,386. It was the largest cruise ship in the world when it entered service in 2006 and is the lead ship of the Freedom Class.
When was Freedom of the Seas last refurbished?
Freedom of the Seas was amplified in early 2020 in a Royal Amplified dry dock. The project added The Perfect Storm waterslides, Splashaway Bay, a two-level The Lime & Coconut bar, Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, El Loco Fresh, Izumi, Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, laser tag, redesigned Adventure Ocean and teen spaces and a refreshed pool deck and Solarium.
Where does Freedom of the Seas sail in 2026 and 2027?
Freedom sails from Miami through April 2027 on short Bahamas cruises to Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau, including 5 night sailings that add Bimini. From May to October 2027 it moves to Southampton, England for Northern and Western Europe cruises, replacing the previously planned Miami summer season, before returning to the Caribbean.
Which staterooms are best on Freedom of the Seas?
Promenade View interiors are a fun pick for people watching, and standard interiors are the value option on short cruises. Balcony staterooms midship give the smoothest ride and a veranda for the CocoCay sail-in. The Ocean View Panoramic Suite is a quirky forward-facing option, and Grand Suites and the Royal Suite add space and Royal Suite Class perks.
What is included in the fare on Freedom of the Seas?
The Main Dining Room, Windjammer, El Loco Fresh, Sorrento’s and Café Promenade are included, as are the shows, ice skating, the waterslides, FlowRider, rock climbing, mini golf, laser tag, pools and Adventure Ocean. Specialty restaurants, alcoholic drinks, Wi-Fi and Royal Beach Club passes are extra. SmartCruiser adds bonus onboard credit on sailings where Royal Caribbean allows it, not available booking direct.
Is Freedom of the Seas a good first cruise?
Yes. The 3 and 4 night Bahamas itineraries from Miami are an easy way to try cruising, with a full day at Perfect Day at CocoCay and a stop in Nassau. The ship is big enough to have waterslides, a FlowRider, an ice rink and multiple shows, but with under 4,000 guests it is easier to learn than an Oasis Class ship.
