About Independence of the Seas

Independence of the Seas was the first ship to go through Royal Caribbean’s Royal Amplified program. Her 2018 dry dock added The Perfect Storm dueling racer slides, the Splashaway Bay aqua park, Battle for Planet Z glow-in-the-dark laser tag, the Royal Escape Room, new restaurants and bars and 107 extra staterooms. The result is a 2008-built Freedom Class ship of about 154,000 gross tons that carries 3,864 guests at double occupancy with most of the thrills of the newer fleet.

She suits families and multigenerational groups who want a lot to do without the size of an Oasis Class ship. Days are filled with the FlowRider, rock climbing wall, Independence Dunes mini golf, Studio B ice skating and 13 dining options including Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, Fish & Ships by the pool and Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade. Evenings bring Royal Theater productions, ice shows, Boleros and the Royal Promenade parades.

For 2026 and 2027 Independence is Royal Caribbean’s Cape Liberty (Bayonne, New Jersey) ship in the warmer months, sailing 4 to 9 night Bermuda, Canada and New England and Eastern Caribbean cruises, then moves to Miami for winter 2026-27 Caribbean sailings that combine Perfect Day at CocoCay with Eastern and Western Caribbean ports. SmartCruiser adds bonus onboard credit on her sailings where Royal Caribbean allows it, not available booking direct.

Independence of the Seas questions we answer every day

How big is Independence of the Seas?
Independence of the Seas is a Freedom Class ship of about 154,407 gross tons and 1,112 feet, carrying 3,864 guests at double occupancy and up to 4,627 at full occupancy in 1,932 staterooms over 15 decks. She is a sister to Liberty of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas, bigger than the Voyager Class but noticeably smaller than Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Icon Class ships.
Where does Independence of the Seas sail in 2026 and 2027?
She sails from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, from spring through fall on 4 to 9 night Bermuda, Canada and New England and Bermuda plus Eastern Caribbean cruises, then repositions to Miami for winter 2026-27 Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings with Perfect Day at CocoCay. The pattern repeats in 2027 with Cape Liberty summer sailings and a Caribbean winter from November 2027.
What did the 2018 Royal Amplified refit add?
The 2018 dry dock, the first in the Royal Amplified program, added The Perfect Storm Typhoon and Cyclone racer slides, Splashaway Bay, Battle for Planet Z laser tag, the Royal Escape Room, Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, Fish & Ships, Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, Sugar Beach, a refreshed pool deck and 107 new staterooms.
Which cabins are best on Independence of the Seas?
Balcony rooms midship on Decks 7 to 10 give the smoothest ride and quickest access to the pool deck and Windjammer. Promenade View interiors are a fun budget pick for people-watching. Families should compare the larger ocean-view rooms that sleep up to six against connecting balconies, and Panoramic Ocean View rooms on Decks 11 and 12 offer floor-to-ceiling glass without a balcony.
What is included in the cruise fare?
The Main Dining Room, Windjammer, Café Promenade, Sorrento’s and Sprinkles are included, as are the Royal Theater shows, ice shows, laser tag, waterslides, FlowRider, rock climbing wall, mini golf, pools, Solarium and Adventure Ocean. Specialty restaurants, Playmakers, Sugar Beach, the escape room, alcohol, spa treatments and the nursery are extra.
Is Independence of the Seas a good ship for families?
Yes. She was amplified specifically to bring Oasis-style family features to the Freedom Class: dueling waterslides, Splashaway Bay, laser tag, an escape room, a FlowRider, ice skating and mini golf, plus the age-grouped Adventure Ocean program and teen spaces. Sailing from Cape Liberty also saves Northeast families the cost and hassle of flying to Florida.
