When to go

Europe runs April to November for the Med and May to September for the north. Shoulder months are the sweet spot.

April to MayMild, uncrowded, wildflowers; the lowest Med fares after Easter. Fjords open in May.
June to AugustHot in the Med, long days up north, families everywhere. Peak prices; midnight sun in Norway.
September to OctoberWarm sea, thinner crowds, harvest season. The best month for the Greek Isles is October.
November to MarchCanaries and Morocco for winter sun from Lisbon and Southampton; Christmas markets by river.

Europe cruise questions we answer every day

How many sea days will I get?

Very few. Most 7-night Med cruises visit six ports in seven days. If you want sea days, look at a 10 to 14 night itinerary or a transatlantic crossing at either end of the season.

Do I need a visa or a passport?

A passport valid six months beyond your return. US and Canadian citizens need no visa for the EU, UK or Norway; from 2026 the EU’s ETIAS travel authorisation applies and we will remind you when you book.

Should I fly in the day before?

Always. Flights to Europe arrive in the morning after an overnight, and a delay can cost you the ship. Two nights before in Barcelona, Rome or Athens turns the flight into part of the trip.

Big ship or small ship in Europe?

Big ships are cheaper per night and great for families, but they dock in industrial ports with long transfers. Mid-size and small ships get into Monte Carlo, Portofino, Kotor and the small Greek islands and often stay late. If the ports are the point, go smaller.

Are taxes and fees included in the prices here?

Yes. Every price on this page includes cruise fare, taxes, fees and port expenses. Flights, hotels, gratuities, drinks packages and excursions are extra.

What do the SmartCruiser picks mean?

They are sailings where booking through SmartCruiser gets you something you do not get booking direct: instant savings, bonus onboard credit, a Special SmartCruiser rate we hold on that sailing, or a senior, resident or police & fire fare that beats the best public price.
